happy new year

We are a company of 10 people and planning to expand to 16 people in a year. Currently, we signed up with a communication company for Avaya Voice T1 system for 17 phones (around $15K) about a month ago. A month has passed and they said that they couldn't get it in on time because "Verizon" couldn't give them the T1 signal on time. They said it normally took a few months to get the signal. This is just for the voice and cabling. Now, they suggest that we should go with Cisco VoIP instead. [Note: they only carry Avaya POTS/Voice T1 and Cisco VoIP.) The installation cost [phones + cabling + routers] comes out to be about the same $14K. The monthly charge for VoIP system is like $450 for primary voice + $225 for maintainance like [software upgrades, move and add (I don't know what this is), and etc.. ]. Each phone will add additional $30 for the additional plan. For the size of our company, I think VoIP monthly fixed cost is about the same as Voice T1 fixed cost. The variable cost of VoIP may be cheaper by $15 a person. This is totally against what I have heard which is VoIP is a lot cheaper than other traditional solutions. Please let me know if our quote is reasonable. Just to make sure that we are not being ripped off.

Plus, if you don't mind, could you please give us some suggestion on companies (or even your company) that I can talk to in New York City area? I prefer Voice T1 (but seem like no one can install that for us in 2 weeks) quality but I don't mind looking at high quality VoIP solutions. I really need a solution soon. Please help.

[Additional Questions]
1. We would like to have a phone in conference room. However, having VoIP is like a waste because we don't use it so often and it doesn't make any sense for us to get a plan for that phone. Are there any solution to this (e.g. 2 physical phones connecting to the same line)?

2. What are the maintainance cost? Why do we need to pay that much monthly if VoIP phone is so good?

3. Why does it take so long for Verizon to get the signal?

Thank you,
--tedro

RE:Disater Recovery

You can tell by my name (NBX) that a have an agenda when it comes to VoIP products. Regardless, I'm not impressed with the way your potential vendor is selling you a solution. You need to learn about what you are buying before you spend $1K a person on a system. Pick up the yellow pages if you need to and call 5 vendors and get them all to examine your needs. The Avaya and Cisco gear is quite different and their willingness to swap you from one to another is not a great sign. I doubt the Cisco gear is cost effective for such a small office and The Avya IP Office is not typically sold with IP phones. (they are often sold with 6400 series phones not the 46xx IP phones -- look at your quote)

In addition, you should understand what their service plan covers AND what data infrastructure improvements are planned, if any. VoIP depends on the data network so these should be part of your fact finding.

IN NYC I know Teledynamics, they sell 3Com's NBX, Avaya and Toshiba. http://www.tele-dynamics.com/ Do your homework and find the right solution for you.

Tedro,

To over simplify on answer....it just doesn't sound right. The cost seems much higher than it should be. T1 voice networks....especially for only 10 folks over VoIP AND in NYC....should cost less than you've been told. Even with loop etc. considered.

FYI, you can research a lot of vendors at once by visiting the VoIP & company boards in the Forum at http://www.dslreports.com . They usually have member comments and reviews you can look over.

For some personal assistance I suggest you give my friend Zach Schechter a call. Zach is in New jersey and knows a lot about the NYC market....including contacts with a number of the available providers there. I'm sure he can find soemthing more reasonable.

You can reach Zach at (732) 942-9666. Since you're kind of calling him out of the blue just tell him I refered you (Michael Lemm). He's a good guy and will help you out.

God Bless,
Michael

1. You wrote: "They said it normally took a few months to get the signal. This is just for the voice and cabling. Now, they suggest that we should go with Cisco VoIP instead"

This makes not sense at all what does VOIP provider have anything to do with your internal office equipment? You can have a traditional phone system and still have a VOIP provider provide you with dialtone for making local and long distance phone calls? I suggest you read the following article http://www.ctvi.com/voip111704.pdf

2. It should cost more than $450 for a T1. If you are getting $450, that is a great price. However, I don't understand what the $225 in addition to the $450 is. Is this a lease? How long is it for? If it is a lease I understand your figures better, otherwise, I do not understand why you would have to pay your carrier any additional fees for each additional person. That does not make sense either.

3. VOIP should be cheaper?? Depends. Equipment - NO WAY. Long distance or local service -- CERTAINLY. Again, reference the article above to explain the details of VOIP and the various service offerings.

Of course, I sell NEC VOIP systems and if you are interested, call my office at 718-252-8075 x510.
