Rep Power: 4 ![]() ![]() | Here is my question for everyone here. I have a computer running Linux here that I would like to install an IP SIP Based phone system on just to play with. I would like recommendations as to what you think I should install and why. PC has 1.5 GIG of ram and 120 GIG storage. It is running Fedora Core 5. I will not change the OS of the system. I am familiar with Linux. Also I would like to add a SIP based phone line to the system so if you have used anyones service like Telasip and have a recommendation I am all ears. Like I said this is just for play time and to help me learn more about SIP.

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | I would try Asterisk. It works with many different Linux distros. There is a version of Asterisk called Trixbox that has been created to get a person going as quick as possible. You can check out nerdvittles.com for Trixbox info or just google for Trixbox. Trixbox even has some customized setup tools for certain VOIP providers built in. I am using a Trixbox CD that installs everything including CENTOS which if you aren't familar is a Redhat clone. It however will reformat an Hard drive upon install. I just took a spare 10 Gig HD I had sitting around and that worked fine. Asterisk or Trixbox requires very little horse power for just a few lines. I'm using 1.5ghz P4 with 256mb of memory. I am using it in conjuction with my existing PBX and using an analog line from it for testing out/in bound calling. That requires an FXO card. They can be found from Digium, Rhino or other manufactures.

Any sip phone you use that works with your IP PBX will work with your IP Service since the service will be connecting to your ip pbx not your ip phone. Good Luck, let us know what you decide on. __________________ -=Welcome to PBXInfo=- -Become a PBXInfo Supporter -Get more PM Space, Profile Picture, a Signature -Add yourself to Pbxinfo's Frappr -Find Nortel Software

Rep Power: 4 ![]() ![]() | Sipx I am interested in learning more about both systems. I have procured a couple of systems to play with so I may do both. I will try to learn a little about both and decide if I want to tackle one before the other. Asterisk seems to have quite a bit of support but SIPX sounds interesting. If you have some places that I could go to learn about Asterick and SIPX I would like to know about them. As far as the SIP Phone goes I was looking for some suggestions on a SIP Provider for a phone number line Vonage etc. Quote:

Rep Power: 4 ![]() ![]() | Thanks for the Info Thanks, I have the CD ready to go and will install Trixbox in the next few days. Found out hard way that it does not allow you by default to select which drive to install on. Have to explain that to the wife yet.......

Rep Power: 4 ![]() ![]() | Update I installed Trixbox that went very smooth and have phones and a SIP phone line working. Very impressive little system. Very clean install and easy to setup. I have been having some fun with this doing some attendants and stuff. __________________ Life is a highway....
