What does it take to get VOIP service available in an area?

First off, please bear with me, as I am an n00b in matters of telco and non-residential type matters, hence my question.

After searching in vain for a VOIP company that offers service in Canada thats' not named Vonage, I"m seriously debating starting my own. The problem is, what the heck is needed to do such a thing? Residential setups I can do liek the back of my mind, but when it comes t what IS's would have to do to offer VOIP and what not, I'm completely lost.

Hence why I'm here.

Basically my beefs are with the following:

What is needed to offer service in an area? For the only VOIP provider that I could find in my search (Vonage), the nearest town that you coudl get a phone number is over an hour away. That's no good to me as everyone that wants to get a hold of me locally has to call long distance. I thought that if you ahd broadband, you could get a local number as well?

NOt being able to transfer numbers? That seems quite odd, although my knowledge of telco laws in Canada is slim to none (like I said, n00b here)

Trying to find out information on what is needed to provide VOIP is slim to none. If you want residential info there's tons of it out there, but finding out hwo to roll your own VOIP provider? Good luck. Granted I havent' finished searching this site, so this question may become void.

SO tehre it is. If anyone has any info that would help me out with this, I'd greatly appriciate it.

You would need a VOIP server connected to high speed internet access with interfaces to connect to local Telco lines and a block of DID numbers from said Telco. Nothing stopping you technicaly but startup $$$$. I have no idea of what regulatory issues you must hurdle.

One thing you may want to think about to do VOIP you need broadband. You may want to find out how many people in your local area have broadband, what is the percentage. If you want to market close first, you may want to look at it.

There are a lot of start ups but your right, I don't know of any major Canadian VOIP providers or at least Ihaven't heard of many...maybe that is because I am in the states?

Good luck, I remember someone posted something about what it would take to start your own voip and it really wasn't that much $$$ overhead in equipment to start out.

This sounds like a great endevor.

Hmm...wonder if I can find that post. That would be valuable info to get a ballpark figure to base things on.

The high speed I can get. The area that I"m in has access to two fo the largest networks in Ontario, both a decent distance away. However I dont' know who does VOIP servers (I figure it's just a normal computer with PBX software?), but the interfaces that I'd need to connect to the telco I"m confused as to what that would entail.

Btw thanks for the quick responses folks. Much appriciated.

Check out htis typical digital interface which you would use to interface a server to Telco. http://www.digium.com/en/wheretobuy/...ct_code=TE410P
The hardware cost is not where the expense is. The installation, and monthly recuring cost of the digital lines from telco would have to be recovered each month from your subcribers.
