SIP vs. H.323

The problem I have seen is everyone has there own interpretation of H.323. Hopefully SIP will be better.

Sip

It appears that SIP has been chosen by most vendors for VOIP systems. SIP and its extensions provide great power and options to the PBX system.

If I am not mistaken, Cisco is the one that brought H323 to the forefront. Other VOIP system manufacturers have invested in SIP. I've been testing a few products with SIP and I have to say its a lot easier to configure end devices. I've seen the Nortel use H323 and I can tell you it was pretty confusing. I think Cisco and Nortel do that for a reason... They dont want just everyone able to configure these without their certifications..

H323 is typically proprietary, you must use the PBX vendor's phones. SIP is open source, and universal so any SIP phone regardless of manufacturer will work on any SIP enabled PBX.

H.323 is an older solid protocol but is not scalable and the white papers associated with it could fill a dump trunk.
SIp is based on HTTP protocol and is more scalable and adaptable to user preferences.

Tadiran uses a new IP phone that can use the MGCP protocol or the SIP protocol. You can upgrade the phone thru a TFTP server for either MGCP or SIP. Pretty versital. If you think about though, how many actual features do the common phone system user actually use? Not many, with that being said it is almost economical to go SIP, unless there is something that the full featured IP sets do that is a total must for the end user...
