Cool Technical Problem

I am working on a Vodavi XTS with a PRI choked down to 4 clusters, recently the customer complained of incoming calls having little "blurps" during the conversation. I heard the same thing while on a call, it sounded like the voice was distorted for about a split second. I have contacted the Service provider and requested them to do invasive testing on the circuit. I am not showing any "slip" alarms on the data dump, has anyone encountered this? What was the resoulution?

I almost hate to ask, what do you mean when you say choked down to 4 clusters. I don't have any XTS running PRI, but I do have an STSe running it.

In flash 24 programming when you assign a card to a specific slot, the code for a full PRI is 08. If you are getting less than a full PRI from the carrier, you have to program the slot for the number of channels closest to what the carrier is providing, according to Vodavi each cluster consists of 4 channels. (example: I am getting 9 channels on a PRI from the provider, I would enter the code of 083 in flash programming indicating I am making the PRI 12 channels. I would then put channels 10-12 in line group 0 making them unaccessable when the TGA number is dialed which in most cases is the number 9.) I hope I didn't go overboard on the explanation.

Not at all, but what about the trouble you were having?

re: PRI

This may be getting back to basics, but make sure your clock switch is in the proper position (ie, if this is the only pipe, you should look for timing from this circuit, and not the KSU clock). If you have multiple pipes, such as a combination of T1s, and PRIs, the clock switches and cables are very important...Otherwise they will fight for control.

Hope this helps, Randy.

I have verified the clocking, I'm not showing any slips, the system has been installed for over a year and the problem just started about a month ago. The carrier shows the circuits to be clean and will not consent to intrusive testing. The carrier did say they were showing "line code violations" that were coming from the switch that may be caused by a connection issue but the wires are secure.

If it has a history of running clean, I would first try the CSU/TSU that is between the PRI and the Smart jack. If no help, I would next try the PRI card. Also, don't remove telco from the equation...the response they gave you sounds "canned". If the first two steps don't help, you've done your dilligence, and it would be appropriate to press the carrier to make the next move, such as the smart jack or a pair change.

Good luck, Randy.

Sorry for the delay in communicating the problem resolution, To make a long story short, the "Carrier" did not have QOS turned on in the router to give voice packets priority over data packets. Once they handled this, I haven't heard from the customer any more.
