Anyone know much about rs232 data ?

Hi folks, just thought I'd throw this one in and see if anyone can help and recognise the type of data that I am receiving ?

I'm working on a PC attached to a piece of 'Eclipse' Nurse Call kit in the UK.
The main display unit on this kit has an rs232 output that can be attached to a PC com port so that all audible 'alarm' calls can also be recorded by a reports package.
Basically I'm trying to test out this call recording software on a PC in the workshop. However I dont have any of the actual kit here to allow me to send a genuine alarm report to the PC com port.
What I do have is a 'snapshot' of the data, from a working system, that can be seen on the PC in the 'view raw data' window when an alarm call has been made
which looks like this.......... [BD][83][81][02][01][01][01][01]
Does that format look familiar to anyone ?

Now, if I link my laptop together with the PC running the reports package, I can replicate that data being sent to the pc. It appears exactly as was sent when using a Hyperterminal session at both ends, however when I close the Hyperterminal session and view the 'raw' data that is actually being 'seen' by the reports package ( same way I captured the data in the first place ).......it looks nothing like it ??
my [original BD][83][81][02][01][01][01][01] has now turned into ......

[5B][42][44][5D][5B][38][33][5D]
[5B][38][31][5D][5B][30][32][5D]
[5B][30][31][5D][5B][30][31][5D]
[5B][30][31][5D][5B][30][31][5D]
..........one long string which I've just chopped up to get it all on the page !

Any thoughts

Cheers

Are you sure you're listening to the Nurse Call at the correct baud rate?

I'm not sure to be honest as the documentation doesnt actually say anything about setting up the com port.
It just says plug the 9 way connector in !
I can only guess the comms portion of the application must auto-sense it .....if thats possible?
I've tried altering the speed on the sending PC and it does alter what I'm viewing, in the 'raw data' window, but it still doesnt come close to what I'm expecting to see.

There are too many options in setting up the comm port to guess it (speed, parity (yes I do know that the likely options only give you a 5 x 3 scenario))

Is there no additional data that you can mine from the web to aid in the configuration of this port?

I'm going to the site next week to try and reinstall the s/w anyway so I'll maybe monitor the data again, using a laptop running Hyperterminal, and see what I'm getting then.
