Jet Ski Jock (This weeks Darwin winner)

Hi there,

How do I determine if my home wiring is a star or not. I have a tone generator, but I'm getting tone on all the same phone number. I've got 4 lines in this house.

Any suggestions. I actually want to put in a home pbx (norstar), but first need to understand the current wiring.

Thanks

The Rancher's Widow

pull off all the wiring on the d-mark, coming from inside the house........then tone each pair and mark the cable at the dmark.........

You can also open up a jack and see if wire is daisy-chained. Most electricians and contractors run cable this way for phone in a residental install.

Good Luck!!

Automatic Set Relocation Problem

Hi,

I'm having problems finding where a pair goes. I've noticed that my bedroom jack is daisy chained to the room next door. I've tried toning out the pair black/yellow that isn't being used but it doesn't tone out in the basement. It must be chained somewhere else I guess. This is going to take a really really long time. I've check most of the jacks, but still no tone.

Well it is daisy-chained. I would go buy a long drill bit. Drill through bottom of jack and floor to basement and run new cable. Leave old cable as a power falure backup. You can spend hours isolating which cable goes from which room to the next, and still not have enough pairs to hookup the phones onto a phone system. just run new cable and label as you install them.

Good Luck!!

Thanks for the advice, but it would be really difficult to rewire the entire house. All the rooms are finished including the basement.

I've even used the vent duct before.. depends on how bad they want a phone. Depending on how your house is sectioned, you might want to run a 4 pair to each area, and branch off of that. Either way, Mitch is right, your going to have a few bouts of frustration. I've had a Norstar 3x8 in my house for 8 years and its been great. GL

home wiring - Star or not start

hmm,

There isn't conduit like a normal commercial building. I think it goes through 2X4's. Maybe I should get one of those fibre option cameras and see where it goes.
