RE: TDA200 PRI -- Clip ID

Anyone else feel this way?

Quote:
I regret that fact that I spent 4 years studying my ass off to enter a career that is stressful, demands never-ending BORING study, and calls for ever-increasing sacrifices of personal time in return for a job that offers average pay and doubtful prospects for long-term employment!

This is the only field where 20 years of experienced is used AGAINST you. It seems to have a good career in IT, you have to kill yourself with IT 24/7...and you're still booted out when you're 35 or 40. I know I'm not the only who feels this and I've decided to plan an exit strategy to leave the field because I've had enough.

This is a Tough Field to be in, I have heard rumors that phone guys have the highest divorse rates, I can't confirm it, But I do know how much time we spend away from home, on call, at jobs sites late, and yes it can take a toll on family/marriage.

Has anyone given thought to what they would want to do with thier lives if they were not a phone tech?

It's kind of tough after being in it so long.

What would you do?

If you'd ask me this 6 years ago - I say open a Bar in Key West. After going thru Katrina (forget that ).

With out phones - What would I do? Right now, I'd be one lost puppy.

I like the new forum layout..

Outgoing calls on PRI Fail

Open a bait & tackle shop on the lake and become a master baiter.

Sorry guys couldn't resist it.

Been in the biz for 30 years, cost=1 wife. Now they want me to learn computers, and now since the co I work for bought a cable co, they want the telecom tech's to do the tech support for cable internet during our regular round of call duty. Don't want to pay us properly for it either.

If I had it to do over, maybe I should have taken that job with McDonell Douglas in St Louis after getting out of the Navy. But wait, that plant was shut down too!

I sadly agree sometimes. Try being a woman in a predominately male field. That's tough! Same rough hours, earning about 60% of what most men make. I can run circles around a lot of them.

Good luck, in whatever you choose to do!

There is one bright side, it is not likely that your phone job can be exported to a call center in India or manufactured in China.

Bubye, one more job for the rest of us.

If not for telecom I'd be a mechanic or a helicopter pilot, who knows I may continue to pursue the pilot thing while doing telecom.

I've had those days where I want to leave the industry, heck I've even ranted and raved about it on here but at the end of the day this industry makes the most amount of money for the least amount of work... at least for me, maybe I don't do a lot of work or maybe I don't consider the work difficult.

I've been told by a few people that if you want to really get ahead in this industry you have to keep on the move, your creditors won't like that but changing jobs every 5 - 6 years seems to be about the norm, gone are the days when you would spend your entire life with one company.

I started as an I&M tech for good ole IL Bell, and have been in and around this field since. Biggest goal is not to leave the field per say, but to work for myself as an independant contractor, thus leaving big business political nightmares behind. Until then, I will just chill right where I am at. Sure the hours, lack of pay etc etc, can suck, but find me a job that pays a little something that doesn't at times.
