Re: VOIP PRODUCT QUESTION

I need to terminate a 25pair Cat3 cable into two patch panels. Since there are so many wires, is there some trick or method to make sure you're putting them in the same order on both panels? It seems like it would be hard to do it based on color because there are so many. Is there maybe a tool that you can connect to each end to make sure it's the same wire, but without having to terminate it onto anything? Or some kind of method to make sure it's done right?

RE: Best way to terminate a 25 pair Cat3

There are several different colour codes for cables - so that plan may not fit.

To "count out" a cable - carefully strip the insulation from the last 20cms of cable trying not to let the individual wires fall apart as you will need to be able to identify the groups (I usually tie the last cm with a cable tie which enables me to pull pairs out of the bunch).

You now need to identify the starting point such as a red blue pair (depending on colour coding) - and pull this pair out of the bunch - now you should be able to see which the next pair are by simply following the "twist" of the cable - pull out the next 9 pairs in order & wrap the red blue pair around the following 9 pairs to give you your first 10 pair group.

As soon as the first 10 pairs are done the rest should be easy.

You can later "buzz out" the panels to check your work.

£750 for Ovida Engineer + Flash Files

I use the same colour code as on the website you have listed for 25 pair cable.

25 PAIR PHONE CABLE
COLOUR CODE
WHITE – BLUE
WHITE – ORANGE
WHITE – GREEN
WHITE – BROWN
WHITE – SLATE
RED – BLUE
RED – ORANGE
RED – GREEN
RED – BROWN
RED – SLATE
BLACK – BLUE
BLACK – ORANGE
BLACK – GREEN
BLACK – BROWN
BLACK – SLATE
YELLOW – BLUE
YELLOW – ORANGE
YELLOW – GREEN
YELLOW – BROWN
YELLOW – SLATE
MAUVE – BLUE
MAUVE – ORANGE
MAUVE – GREEN
MAUVE – BROWN
MAUVE – SLATE

There is also another Colour code for 100 pair which is actually divided into 5 groups of twenty. Both of these codes are for indoor use cable.

100 PAIR COLOUR CODE
The colour-code is based on the five-colour sequence of Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, and Slate which are used in that order for the first five pairs. Knowing this sequence of five colours allows you to easily determine the order of the remaining pairs as follows:

Pairs 21 to 40 repeat the "Line -" colours but with a YELLOW mate for "Line +".
Pairs 41 to 60 repeat the "Line -" colours but with a BLACK mate for "Line +".
Pairs 61 to 80 repeat the "Line -" colours but with a VIOLET mate for "Line +".
Pairs 81 to 100 repeat the "Line -" colours but with a RED mate for "Line +".

WHITE - BLUE
WHITE - ORANGE
WHITE - GREEN
WHITE - BROWN
WHITE - SLATE
WHITE - BL/WHITE
WHITE - BLUE/ORANGE
WHITE - BLUE/GREEN
WHITE - BLUE/BROWN
WHITE - BLUE/SLATE
WHITE - ORANGE/WHITE
WHITE - ORANGE/GREEN
WHITE - ORANGE/BROWN
WHITE - ORANGE/SLATE
WHITE - GREEN/WHITE
WHITE - GREEN/BROWN
WHITE - GREEN/SLATE
WHITE - BROWN/WHITE
WHITE - BROWN/SLATE
WHITE - SLATE/WHITE

Cool The Saying To Remember The Group Color Order!!

Here is a little saying they taught us back in my old days at phone school to remember the order of what group goes first, second and so on:
"Wired...........Right........Brings..........You. ............Victory!!"
WHITE group RED group BLACK group YELLOW group VIOLET group
The first letter of each word assoicates with first letter of the associated group color.

The victory I am sure you guessed is you are done and it works good the first time!! Hope this helps any of the new people learning the color code. Can't remember the little saying to remember the BLUE, ORANGE, GREEN, BROWN, SLATE saying. I just got the habit of mentally saying....Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate over.....and over......and over in my head till it just became second nature.

So knowing the group saying first and dividing the 25 pair into those 5 groups, then starting with the first group and putting them in the Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate order you should be good to go!!

Good luck!!

You now have the color code which will probably be a good thing to print out and keep but what kind of patch panel are you running this into? If it is for a modular patch panel that you are going to plug patch cords into, make sure that you only wire up the necessary pairs to each jack that you will need. If it is going to be one pair per jack, terminate each pair to the punching that is colored blue. The lead that is predominately white, red, black, yellow, and violet will be on the left.
