RE: Alcatel Brochures and Downloads now available.

Hope someone has some insight. I worked for 5 years in the military on commo equipment and then 2 years for a Nortel vendor doing install/MAC work. I currently work for a company that makes medical software and as part of my job I routinely interface Dialogic telphony boards with digital PBX lines of all makes and models. I hope to one day get back into telecom work, but everyone job that pays anything wants experience in VOIP, T1 provisioning and testing and lots more. What are some good resources as far as learning the good, high paying telcom info. What are the good certs to have when looking for careers in the telecom world? I guess I am just looking for advice about how to advance my career in the telecom world using what I currently have (MCSA) and my Nortel and switching backgrounds. Thanks for the input.

You should be able to get a Tech position with no problems. Moves, Adds and Changes people are always in need.

You may want to check out GlobalKnowledge.com for some of the latest certifications.

What would you like to do? Engineering, Design, Install, Service, Maintenance, Management?

You might want to look into open source PBX's as well, Install one and play with SIP technologies. It won't hurt

Wifi Headsets?

Thanks for the advice rix, much appreciated. I have done MAc work before and I am looking to get into more design and administration. My background is in Nortel, but what's hot now? Obviously IP telephony and Call center work, but I am looking at all my career paths and just wondering what course some others have taken. Thanks for he quick response.

Since you have Nortel background you could just expand on that:
http://www.nortel.com/training
Start looking at Nortel Certified Architect and what certs are there, anything dealing with VoIP will be valuable. A lot of Nortel course build on each other so when you are done, you could be halfway to your next certification.

Also I would looking into getting your CCNA, I have found a lot of people are able to do self study type courses and pass the exam. Having Nortel and Cisco Certification will give you some great diversity.

Also SIP is rapidly growing in the telephony industry and you will see it integrated more and more. Getting your head around this concept can really help you understand future applications in telephony.

One great way to do this is to start playing/learning/and using your own SIP PBX.

Good luck

Chat Feature Upgraded!

One thing I have been meaning to ask, but forgot. There is a lot of equipment you can get Nortel certified on. The problem is, I don't know what they all do. Is there some sort of broad Nortel architect cert that I could look into? How do I figure out what equipment does what and what equipment cert gives me the most ROI?
