I am looking for a pbx (boat anchor ) to provide dial tone and intercom dialing for a few phones, touch tone and rotary. This is for a demo system that goes to schools and career fairs as part of a "technology through the ages" exhibit . Most younger kids haven't even used a rotary phone so it would be nice to show how it works. At present I have a small unit made by an unknown manufacturer, but it does not support pulse dialing. Anyone know of a system which can?

Well,

Actual pulse dialing is accomplished by a mechanical central office. It was basically a series of gears that rotated as the pulses were heard from the distant end. They where refereed to most commonly as XY Switches.

As an example, if your were dialing my fictional number 234-5678. The first gear would rotate to 2, the second gear would rotate to 3, the third gear would rotate to 4, etc. With a mechanical lever landing and making contact with each pulse representation (A make/break contact).

Unfortunately for you, those systems are all now digital. Even if you have a pulse phone it's converted to digital when it reaches the Central Office.

You might be better off trying to get hold of a 1A1 or better yet 1A2 system by Western Bell (Check any depot around a USAF base). These systems duplicated the Mechanical movements of an XY Switch locally. You'll be able to hear the Clicks of the make/break contacts as the person is dialing.

You could do a demonstration from one set dialing another set.

Basically do a search for a Plantronics 584C Panel (1A2) and see if you can find a system with phones.

Post back if you have questions.

Any old Mitel switch (SX-5,10,10e,Super 10, 20,50,100,200) will accept rotary and TT phones. Any Panasonic KX system will do the same.

You could probably get a TD-308 or 30810 for less than $200. The TD will only come as a 4 analog port box.

Re: Market Share

Actually it's fine if it's accomplished through an electronic system, the only thing we would like is to be able to dial and ring other phones, maybe 4 or so using both rotary and touch tone telephones. More of course would be better as we have a lot of different styles of telephone. I am going to search for the units mentioned here, and if anyone else comes up with ideas i am open to them. Another solution I thought of was to equip each rotary phone with a DTMF conveter but this is a last resort as I don't have the time to build them at this point.

The final solution to this problem is the NuTone ptx-1200. There's someone selling these locally for under $60.00, it works with rotary phones and rings even classic Bell phones. Has some nice features and a robotic 80's voice too! Gives a real 48V DC and 90V 20Hz ringing voltage. If anyone else wants one of these let me know, he's got a bunch!!
