I'd like to see an actual 'competency level' associated with telecommunications job titles. What does a Senior Telecommunications Analyst do compared to a Junior Telecommunications Analyst? And is there such a title as Junior Telecommunications Analyst? What I had in mind was to follow the Electricians Job Titles. As an example: Telecommunications Apprentice – Responsible for the extension/connection of telecommunications from a PBX or Central office to an end location. Additional Responsibilities: Understanding of communication wiring, MDF and IDF infrastructure. Etc… Then a Telecommunications Journeyman would include the apprentice duties plus additional duties of Administrative programming, employee supervision, etc.. Then a Telecommunications Master would include the apprentice and journeyman duties but move into management areas etc… Then you would crossover into Telecommunications Management or to Telecommunications Engineering. I do realize that we all do a little bit of each and that we all have different responsibilities under our current titles. That's why I never followed through on the acutal titles. I for example am not responsible for infrastructure – I don’t run cables, install jacks or even troubleshoot jacks. I do play nicely with others and if I see that it’s a bad jack – I’ll replace it – but I don’t have to. Whereas, some analyst are required to support the infrastructure - that just doesn't make sense. It's like a computer analyst installing his own 120 power outlet to support his PC? I just think it would be cool to have a title and that title actually convey what you do. By the way my title is Telecommunications On-Site Contractor (but I’m an hourly employee).
