Looking for some suggestions of what most of you have/would like to use for labeling floor jacks for the PBX extensions.
The situation is this:
We have the oppertunity to PICK the way jacks are labled in the new building we're moving to shortly....

I have a few ideas of good ways to go, but looking for some input as to what others have used or like to see.

Wiring

Even thoug I vote for Office number I usually marke the outlets (RJ-45) like this for example: Starting from left to right. Ground floor 1001 - 1999. First floor 2001 - 2999, and so on. But if I have a cabin on every floor then I give them an adress then it would be like this. 11-1001. 21-2001 and so on.

Will you have multiple IDF's?

If so,
I like the way we're setup.

Each IDF has a number:

IDF 1 (House pairs 1-900)
IDF 2 (House pairs 901 - 1500)
IDF 3 (House pairs 1501 - 2200)
etc..........

The jacks are ran to the closest IDF room.

The jacks are then labeled IDF 1-101A, B, C, and D. Meaning that this
quad cable runs to IDF 1 and is jack 101.

I also like AMP workstatin connectors. Click the http below.
You'll notice that the Jack Housing is always wired 568A or 568B, but the inserts determine if the Jack Outlet will bee 100BaseT or Voice......

Icy, I have a tendancy to lean toward office number as well, but Chas, I've seen more layouts like yours...
Unfortunatly, I'm not sure if there will be mutiple IDFs (I have a hunch there will be)
Big question for the group is which is going to be easier to manipulate and keep track of over time...
There is a lare turnover and it's a VERY large company (5000 +)
Hmmm...

This was fun, how would you have figured this one out?

I would vote office Number as well. As long as people don't move offices.

So

6199-1 a/b

6th floor
Room 199
Jack 1
Ports A and B
This is a bit more confusing but if you understand the concept it works out well.

In our current building they actually do all of the above plus 1 so the jacks are label

6199A-1 - 001
6199B-1 - 002
6199A-2 - 003
6199B-2 - 004

6199- Room
A- Port
1- Location in room i.e. 1st jack
001- Jack Number

Jack Numbers are always unique.

When I first saw this set up I complained about how bad the labeling was, but once I had to trace out jacks, it was very easy, as all you needed was the "Jack Number" then it told you what room and what position in the room the jack was at.

again it took a little getting use to but I think it works out well.

your right, rix, that's a bit on the confusing side

Currently the set up is by Flr, Room, Jack; Unfortunatly, they tend to move offices ALOT, so there is always a bit of panic when there are big moves comming up.

On the upside, with the programming done from scratch, we can assign the DES to the jack and make moves that way.

We Tend to Be More Like What Rixride Said with the Exception that We Tend to Color Code the Jack Red or yellow for Data, Black or White for Phone all RJ45,

I usually number by room number. For example, in a school-classroom 113 jacks would be 113D1 and 113D2. (and so on) This works as long as room numbers don't change.
