Hi,

I am fairly new to telecom stuff so I may not be using the correct technical terms. I am trying to trace a connection on the IDF from a parameter office that do not use standard harmonica blocks. There is a small silver (jack?) box (looks almost like an electrical outlet) that has 4 modular plug connection points. One is being used for the active phone. I just received a new tracer and when I set it to Tone and try to trace on the IDF with the inductive amplifier, I am not receiving any tone. The active connection will not generate a tone but the polarity will show solid green. I have used my amplifier before so I know it works properly but I am not sure if there is a problem with the tracer unit or if I am doing something wrong.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Laura

Help needed in tracing a connection....

It sounds like you have battery on that pair. Try another pair

panasonic sucks

It's possible that the particular outlet bypasses the IDF and runs directly to the MDF. Have you tried toning out the jack to the MDF? Also, is the active phone you're trying to tone out connected to a PBX or is it a 1FB (business line from your LEC)?

Some phone systems as well as network devices (switches/hubs/routers) will pull the tone from the generator so far down you will almost never hear it, even when you are dead on it. If you have one of the better tone generators, like mine (adaptoner AT(I can put tone on any of the wires by placing the clips on different locations) you can put just the red lead on one wire, and put the black lead on an independant ground.

Different people wire jacks differently. Some run an individual wire for each jack, even for phones, while others split phone cables out to 2, 3 or even 4 jacks. Take the jack cover off the wall you can see if the wires are all going to one jack. If they are, take the brown pair off and put your tone generator on that (the unused cable pairs may even be wrapped around the cable at the jack). If one cable goes to different jacks, try toning out the different jacks as well.

Are the wires terminated on patch panels (where you plug into the front) or on 66 blocks (where the wires go into a "V" shaped piece of metal)? Make sure you are looking on the right spots.

I know it is something you have checked, but make sure the tone generator is turned on, and that your wand (inductive amplifier) is turned up. I have wasted time by these simple mistakes over the years.

If the phone that is active is the same style as a house phone (not on a phone system, but straight from Ma Bell) you can take the number and see if you can find it on the wiring blocks (DMARC or NID) that Ma Bell has (usually with orange covers with labels, or in metal boxes that are labeled inside) and find the number. Once you find the number, you should be able to find tone there directly on the number. If you do, trace the jumper wire from that block back to the wire, and that should be one of two things, 1) your wire you are looking for, 2) a cable feed from that closet to another closet. If it is going to another closet, write down the cable pair and go to the next closet and so on. Sometimes it is easier to work backwards from the number.

If you can't find the tone - use the working phone as a clue..

Call and perform a Trace on the working phone - find the TN.

Then start from the MDF, trace the TN to the IDF house pair. Goto the IDF
and trace to your station cables.

Usually a quad of jack will be grouped together, so look for your tone in that area.

The green light could mean continuity or battery...

Hmmmmm. just a thougt, could it be that in the outlet is a digital number instead of analog, then of course you get no dialtone but maybe a slight whissling tone?

the wiring inside the floor jack is missing the wiring with the U-clip attachments? Going to see about splicing the wires.
