I'm new to our phone system. We have an Nortel Option 11 and I know just enough to be dangerous!
I recently had a user move from one office to another. What's the best way to handle this? Should I relocate the punch downs in the telco room or should I make the change in the system itself? If so, how do you move a user from on location to another within the system?

Thanks!

I've found if a user moves to different office, it's easyer to move the crossconnect at the MDF.

That seemed to work just fine. I do have a question, I noticed as I was punching down the cross-connects into their new positions that I would get an occasional spark if I hit the metal guides adjacent from my position. Is this normal? Can one do damage to the PBX by punching with a metal tip punch down tool? Mine is as sharp as a cheap butter knife so it takes a lot of wrangling to cut the excess wire!
I know, I know, go get some real tools...

What you are doing is shorting the pairs (you don't want to do that) take some electrical tape and wrap it around the end of your punch down tool a couple of times if you are going to do live punch downs.

Yes you can ocasionaly spark the contacts while you're punching down if they are live. I'm pretty sure it won't hurt the PBX. However if you put your hand on the block and someone makes a call you might feel a little something
