Rep Power: 6 ![]() | AT&T CPE tech? I'm looking for some insight. Hopefully someone can help. What I want to know is how does the "new AT&T" handle their CPE installs and Maintenance? Who installs the customer owned PBX's and data equipment (Nortel, Avaya and Cisco)? Contractor or AT&T employee? If it's a AT&T employee what title do they have? I'm just looking to understand. Since I may very well be one of those guys soon. If anyone knows of someone I could talk to that would be great too.

Location: San Diego, CA Rep Power: 5 ![]() | I would be interested in seeing what AT&T techs say. When AT&T spun off Lucent in 1996 all the CPE work went with it. Now that AT&T is getting back in to the local dial tone arena again I would suspect they will do whatever the local company was doing. SBC (the local company) provides Centrex and for a while was doing KTS and small PBXs like Panasonic and others. SBC (now AT&T) was not installing Avaya machines and probably not Nortel, Cisco, Siemens, etc. either. Though I could be wrong. In my area all they are providing are the circuits, everything from a single line up to and including OC-48's. If they are planning to get back in to the CPE business they will essentially be starting from scratch. If they do come back look for them to be doing IP Telephony either partnered with a vendor or installing equipment of their own design. When I had the job long ago, it was called System Technician and before that, PBX Installer. Look in the Union handbook for a job with a similar title and read the job descriptions. It is likely they might be dormant titles right now with no one having them. __________________ Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup. Rep Power: 6 ![]() | In the current contract (2005) there is not a system tech. In the legacy AT&T there is. I know they do CPE work. I hear everyone say they do. It's even listed on their website that they do VOIP PBX's. They are a Cisco partner. http://www.business.att.com/service_...egment=ent_biz Nortel list them as a partner. http://app89.nortelnetworks.com/Part...tate=&zipcode= The funny thing is I can't find anyone who does the work?

Nortel has traditional and IP switches and probably similar requirements. If you can't find anyone who does it I would guess that the I&M of the CPE equipment is done by the respective partner. If AT&T is getting back in to the CPE field for real then I would suspect that they will want to have their own trained techs and not rely on someone else to do this. All you can do is keep an eye out, let your boss know you want to transfer to the job, and contact AT&T HR for info. In the old days I would also say check with the Union because they would know what was happening but now AT&T might be wanting to make this new job a non Union job. I don't know anyone at AT&T any more, they've all retired, so I can't ask anyone. __________________ Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup. I'm not going to go into things here but I know at&t CPE techs in California who install Nortel, Cisco and I think Avaya IP office. (Or something that sounds similiar to that) Currently the at&t CPE techs out here are under the CWA union.
