800# fraud

Has anyone heard of any current 800# frauds where the call is initially free but then the caller is charged somehow?

Yes, this is an old scam. You call an 800 number and that number redirects the call to a 900 number. You are not aware of that until the bill comes.

As far as I know, this still happening. At least I hear that it still happens. You will never know what the 900 number is because that is dialed behind the scenes, besides that happens outside of your PBX where you have no control over it.

I do not have any 800 numbers now, but this would be hard to block because they could have multiple 800 numbers going to one illicit site. You would find out when the bill comes.

I would suggest being proactive. Look at your call accounting output every day and note all calls to 800 numbers. Then go to one of the Internet yellow pages sites and look up those numbers to verify if it is legit. If in doubt, block it. Then let the person explain what it is for and the business reason for calling it.
