AT&T to Kill Cingular

AT&T to Kill Cingular

READ MORE: AT&T, Carriers, Cellphones, Cingular, TOP

Not sure why we didn’t see this earlier, but everyone’s favorite wireless brand, Cingular, is going to go bye-bye. AT&T is currently purchasing Cingular’s parent company, BellSouth, and will remove the Cingular name, replacing it with the euphonious AT&T Wireless. Gone, too, will be the dancing orange fellow we all know and love.
Branding and building the Cingular line cost BellSouth $4 billion. Oh well.

This Sucks, I hate AT&T. AT&T's billing model has always been a nightmare not to mention customer service and thier whole history of just not being liked... What are they thinking?

Plus just the name AT&T sings monoply to me. I am just not fond of that company. They really need to remarket themselves. Their old network was crap...now we will get a nice mix of Crap and more crap.

Crap....

I see I am not alone in my thinking: Check out all the comments on this article:

Sort of makes sense - AT&T = SBC - same sh!t different name. SBC has always had a 'relationship' of some type with Cingular. (SBC employees have company phones through Cingular and also recieve consession benefits for having their personal cell phones with Cingular) Somewhere along the line Cingular bought AT&T wireless so everything comes back around full circle again.

So what about Verizon? I haven't checked but I think they are still the largest Telco around after the SBC / ATT thing... they have their own cellular network that they bought / built up, they're also into broadband and with them dropping fiber to the prem everywhere comments have been made about providing TV services over it as well.

Out here on the left coast the Cingular network is what used to be the Pacific Bell Wireless network - guess who bought Pacific Bell - SBC... now AT&T. (The 1900mhz GSM portion that is - the older 800mhz stuff is now Verizon Wireless after going through 3 or 4 other companies)

I used to have Cingular but I've found that their combination of cell site density and the performance of the 1900mhz band in SoCal tends to create some quality issues on the fringe. The city I live in does not allow the installation of cell sites forcing the cellular carriers to cluster on the edge of town - line of site from my house to the nearest cell site is about 7 miles, with Cingular (cell site installed on the roof of a 2 story building) I could only get marginal service on my patio - the VW site (across the street on a 100ft monopole) provides 3 - 4 bars of reliable service inside my house. Bear in mind that I live in the hills. Sprint seems to have the same issue in this area with their 1900mhz stuff but Nextel does ok with 800mhz.

I wonder if or how this will affect T-mobile, from what I can tell they simply resell service on the Cingular network under their own name; I sure hope they don't take the whats-her-face ads off TV.
