sound [n]: 1 a : a particular auditory impression : TONE b : the sensation perceived by the sense of hearing c : mechanical radiant energy that is transmitted by longitudinal pressure waves in a material medium (as air) and is the objective cause of hearing In order for there to be "sound" there must be a hearer because the definition requires that the sound cause an "impression" or a "sensation" in the hearer. Perhaps thae answer would be clearer if the question was "Does it make a noise?" Now we could play the physics and philosophy game further and argue that since the falling tree definitely emits audio waves which are radiant energy and energy is neither created nor destroyed but rather transmitted or transmuted that the tree does create a sound but perhaps one that is not *consiously* perceived by persons outside the empty forest. But would such an unconscious perception be called "hearing"? And if not could the tree's falling be called a "sound"? And can one hear without actually hearing? And how much wood *could* a woodchuck chuck? Or how much ham could a hamster stir...... __________________ Life is far too important to be taken seriously!

Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar Who could think you under the table. David Hume could out-consume Schopenhauer and Hegel, And Wittgenstein was a beery swine Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel. There's nothing Nietzche couldn't teach ya 'Bout the raising of the wrist. Socrates, himself, was permanently pissed. John Stuart Mill, of his own free will, On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill. Plato, they say, could stick it away-- Half a crate of whiskey every day. Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle. Hobbes was fond of his dram, And René Descartes was a drunken fart. 'I drink, therefore I am.' Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed, A lovely little thinker, But a bugger when he's pissed. __________________ Life is far too important to be taken seriously!

Rep Power: 8 ![]() | Am I logged in or not??? Rush, The Trees There is unrest in the forest, There is trouble with the trees, For the maples want more sunlight And the oaks ignore their pleas. The trouble with the maples, And they're quite convinced the're right They say the oaks are just too lofty And they grab up all the light. But the oaks can"t help their feelings If they like the way they"re made. And they wonder why the maples Can"t be happy in their shade? There is trouble in the Forest And the creatures all have fled As the Maples scream "Oppression!" And the Oaks just shake their heads So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights. "The oaks are just too greedy; We will make them give us light." Now there's no more oak oppression, For they passed a noble law, And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe, and saw. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- __________________ Two snips, a snort, a turn, a fly, and a grunt, and it was so simple, like the jitterbug, it plum evaded me!

Even the finest name is insufficient to define On-line. Without words, On-line can be experienced, and without a name, it can be known. The On-line that can be told is not the true On-line. The Off-line that can be determined is not the true Off-line. Yet mystery and manifestations arise from the same source. This source is called PBXINFO. PBXINFO within PBXINFO. The gateway to all understanding. We cannot know On-line itself, nor see its qualities direct, but only see by differentiation, that which it manifests. __________________ Life is far too important to be taken seriously!
