HG1500 V3 Initialisation and Configuration

Hi,

This is my first post in the Siemens forum, so if you haven't already read my introduction thread - i'd like to say hi.

I mentioned in my intro thread that i'm currently trying to learn a few tricks with the Siemens HiPath systems. At the minute i've got a HiPath 3550 setup at home with an optipoint500 economy for basic testing. I've also got a HG1500 card in the system, and my boss has given me the task of getting it working. Just to clear any concern up - we are system installers, and we purchase the systems from a Siemens dealer - so i'm not quite average Joe trying to move a few extensions on the system at his workplace . The system i'm working on can be defaulted with no consequences, as it's in a test environment.

The problems i'm having are numerous. Primarily, we have a severe lack of documentation on the HG1500 cards. The dealer we use has a habit of trickle feeding information to us, and a lot of the time we struggle to get straight answers out of them. It would appear that a lot of their understanding of the system has come through experimentation following the attendance of various Siemens training courses that we have not had the luxury of being able to attend. Unfortunately, this understanding is not usually passed on to us, and so we are usually cut off at the knees in terms of problem solving and trouble shooting the specifics of these systems. It's difficult to the point of being agonising when we call them with specific questions to get a lot of "umms and aahs" - ie speculation.

The card i'm working on is a HG1500 v3. I'm able to connect to it via hyper terminal / serial port and can view the running configuration, however any changes i make (ip addresses) do not seem to flow through by anything actually changing. I did receive a demo on how to perform a configuration, however the card i was shown was using newer firmware and the commands were completely different - "get write access" being the key to making any changes.

My understanding of the card is that i can upgrade it with a more recent firmware image via tftp or ftp, but that's a struggle when i can't actually get the card on my network - let alone have access to any firmware images.

Does anybody have any pointers for my particular revision of this card, or a link to a programming manual for the card? Like i said, our dealer has given us a large chunk of manuals and information, half of which is in german, and none of which seems relevent to what i'm actually trying to achieve.

Thanks for reading

Paul

if you connect to the switch and pull a database it should show you the default ip address associated with the HG card, normally a 10.144.xxx.xxx.once you have that ip address change the ip on your NIC card to something similar and use a cross-over patch cable and plug it into the lan 1 port on the hg card and make sure your nic card show connected. open your internet browser ant type in the ip address as follows Index of /. it will go to the login screen and ask for the username/password both being 31994. once in the card click the lock to get write access and change away. also make sure that you have the correct version of java running on your machine, if you dont there is a link provided at the hg login screen. hope this helps

yeah i've recognised that IP address, i put my nic in the same range but couldn't get any response from it. i was using a straight patch lead through a switch, but i'll try your suggestion and see how it goes.

thanks mate

no joy unfortunately . it seems that the HG card is continually rebooting. it loads itself, says i have 3 seconds to interrupt autoboot, then it proceeds to start over. i've captured the output via hyperterminal.

interestingly enough, i can actually get some ping responses for about 10 seconds while this process is occuring. unfortunately, i can't actually get anything from the web interface, i've tried port 80 and 8085.

the last bit of output that i get is this:

Quote:
V.24 Command Line Interface active!

Web Server listening for HTTP connections on port 8085

Starting Reboot with reboot type 2 (clear)
Executing Reboot for EvtCode 102 (MSG_EXCEPTION_REBOOT)

Receiving Msg after Exit Msg from OAM (before Exit from tTrcTask)
perhaps i need to change the boot flags?

[edit]: boot flag 0x00 is "use ftp to get boot image". since i don't have an ftp server running, and i have no images for the hg card to boot from..perhaps it's continually rebooting in the hope that it'll find an image upon next reboot? this might explain the "host inet (h)" ip address of 10.144.233.1 - maybe that is the designated target ftp server?

What version of software are you running on the switch. if you are running v5-v7 in the switch and v3 or v4 on the hg card it will never come out of boot. i know that the hg card hardware version is v3 but what software version is it running, also if the hg card is at v5 or higher and the switch softawre is running v4 or lower in will continously reboot.

thanks for the upgrade guide, i'll check it out.

my switch, as in my network switch, is not a PoE switch and i wasn't aware that the HG card needed a specific brand, type and version of switch?

i'll take a screendump of the hyperterminal session to find out what software version we have.

thanks!

[edit]: here's the version information from the ht session

i'm also not sure if i've got the correct software image to upgrade this card. our dealer gave us a few different discs with very little explanation of what was on them. they've basically been copied directly off the siemens dealer ftp site from what i can gather, and i have no idea exactly what it all is. does anyone have an example of software image naming conventions so that i might find one on these discs?

on another note, i guess the word "switch" could be meaning the phone system? it's not a term we use in Australia . the system is a v6.

thanks

when i said switch i meant phone system sorry for the confusion. i think the reason the hg card continues to reboot is due to the software image loaded on the card attached ids the latest software for the card . you will need a tftp or ftp server to get the software to load. check pm

the upgrade seemed to go ok - it grabbed the firmware image across the network and was able to load it. it's currently sitting on:

Quote:
Press ENTER to skip waiting for Firmware-HDLC-Msgs being polled...
and has been for some time..i'm a bit hesitant to reboot the card incase it's performing a first-boot configuration or something...will see how it goes.

thanks mate!

[edit]: i ended up doing the whole process again as the card was acting strangely. after a few reboots it seems to be working as advertised - thanks a lot to everyone who helped out with input - especially aj .
