Panasonic KX-TEA308 SLT problem

I've fitted a KX-TEA308 to my home using RJ45s and this has been working perfectly using proprietary phones. I have now tryed to include a compatable portable phone. Everything is working well - answers calls ok, paging other extentions ok, other extentions show the correct light when the portable phone is off hook etc but I cannot obtain an outside line using the portable phone. Pressing 9 does not work (software is set to 9 for automatic line access). I'm not using it as a 'paralleled telephone'. Has anyone any ideas?

Sounds like it is picking up a blank line
If you don't have 3 lines on the system make sure the unused lines are disabled in prog 400
