OK,
I replaced the lead.
I also reported the fault to BT.
Apparently, BT have never ever had a fault that's down to them in their entire history which is quite impressive.

They rebooted the isdn which cleared the condition for a couple of days but then it came back.
In the Panasonic PDF "Log Information" it says: 'This information [error 390] is logged when synchronisation of digital line is established, and does not indicate an error condition that needs to be solved'
Ergo, this is a 'fault' that can be ignored - I think.

the kxtda logs a lot of things that are minor, I don't look there now unless I have a fault
