strange win

KANSAS CITY, Kansas (Ticker) When Tony Stewart ran out of fuel coming out of the second turn of the last lap Sunday, a simple thought came to mind.
"My job for the most part was over at that point," Stewart said. "I figured when I got to the start-finish line, we'd know where we finished."
Stewart shifted the car into neutral and coasted. He had a 17-second lead over Casey Mears and began rolling toward the flagstand, hoping to get there before his nearest pursuer.
Ultimately, Stewart had nothing to worry about as Mears also ran out of gas, bringing a strange end to the NASCAR Nextel Cup Banquet 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Yeah and Gordon loses a stinking $200 electric fuel pump which will probably cost him the championship. I thought how odd to lose a part like that until I got to work and two of the trucks in the fleet lost the fuel pump within 2 hours of each. THe same wrecker driver was laughing his *** off.

Saw it on TV... pretty funny stuff.

Unlike other forms of racing file mileage estimates in NASCAR are closer to guessing than anything else - I don't think they have the level of telementray (or the sensors) from the the cars that folks in F1, CART, IRL and those series get.

Do stock cars use electric fuel pumps? I've seen things on TV that make it sound like they stick with the old school mechanical pump, one commentator went as far as to say that they did that to prevent the fuel system from being presurized in the event that the engine shut down or had a leak during an accident.

The OEMs have been installing shock sensors on passenger cars that will cut the fuel pump off after an impact the exceeds x number of Gs for years now... no reason why stock cars can't use them. (Same goes for fuel injecton, roller cams (ARCA has them) and 4 link rear suspensions)

My bad. Stock cars do use high pressure high volume mechanical pumps to prevent fires after collisions. Must have taken in too many fumes in the pits in an earlier life. Guess I was kinda wierded out by losing two fuel pumps in the same day.

Cool, thanks for the verification.

Slightly different subject on the same topic - JPM is supposed to be running in the ARCA race at Dega this weekend (Saturday I think) should be an interesting race.

lol: There are already a few bets going as to how long he'll last with the NASCAR schedule... slightly more intense than what he is used to.
