Device stops speeders from inside car
Report: Canada testing device that alerts drivers whenever the exceed speed limits.
December 4, 2005; Posted: 2:54 p.m. EST (1954 GMT)

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Canadian auto regulators are testing a system that would enforce speed limits by making it harder to push down the car's gas pedal once the speed limit is passed, according to a newspaper report.

The system being tested by Transport Canada, the Canadian equivalent of the U.S. Department of Transportation, uses a global positioning satellite device installed in the car to monitor the car's speed and position. If the car begins to significantly exceed the speed limit for the road on which it's travelling the system responds by making it harder to depress the gas pedal, according to a story posted on the Toronto Globe and Mail's Website.

The pilot test, using 10 cars driven by volunteers, is believed to be the first in North America, although similar systems have been tested in several European countries, according to the newspaper.

The agency is also testing another system that warns drivers with a voice alarm and a light whenever they start to speed, the newspaper said. Those systems are already on sale, according to the report. The company that makes the alarm device, the Otto Driving Companion, has already sold 400 of the units in Winnipeg alone, the newspaper said.

Warn me with a voice alarm and a light sounds fine just don't make my car any more complcated that you already have, what happens should the speed restrictor fail and limit me to 30mph on a freeway? Or it fails the other way, can I just claim in court that it was supposed to warn me and didn't so I must have been driving OK?

well, I guess in a way it's only slightly more complicated than the auto choke they've got installed on a lot of rentals these days (like the Dodge Intrepid I've got for this current trip... ...Can't get it above 70!)

NEW: Flowers from the Bruce ;)

Doesn't sound like it would be too difficult to disable or retune.

Most cars are software governed to a given speed (usually below the max speed rating of the tires the OEM sells the car with) and with the right tools that governor can be either removed or increased. Rentals are probably even more governed.

There was some talk a few years back in the auto circles about newer cars being factory equipped with a system that would both notify the authorities if you were speeding and also slow the car to a stop if you were being pursued by the police... I haven't heard much about it recently.

I recall that some years ago Buick (I think) had a device called 'speedminder'. You set the hand on a given speed on the speedometer and it buzzed if you went past it.

Tracking Wrong Number

The Ranger is limited at 90. That sucks because the speedo goes up to 120. I paid for those extra numbers on the speedo, I should get to use them!

There is a system in the UK called Tracker which if you notify the police that your car has been stolen they can then track your car through GPS.

http://www.tracker-network.co.uk/home.php?SVR

There was talk a few years ago of extending the system to allow use of the antilock braking systems and such but after testing it was deemed possibly dangerous to either apply the brakes or cut the engine.

Automating vehicle functions like that just sounds dangerous. Think if you are in a situation to react quickly and the car won't let you. YOu get into an accident.

"Your Honour, it is the car's fault" like that would fly....

You should be able to get around that via chip or a reflash depending on the engine management technology in use.

My LS was limited to 133 but I when I reflashed it I got a few more miles per hour out of it. Factory tires are rated to 150.

Heck I already have one of these in my Jetta Wolsburg...it's called my wife. Sounds like this "you know the speed limit is 65..?" My system comes with some extra sounds as well. I'll list a few:

"What is the sound"
"I'm cold, does the heat work in this thing?"
"I don't like this car, it's to bummpy"
"Don't get so close to the car in front of you"
"Better start slowing down"
