Calif. Senate votes to ban hunting via Internet

Thursday, April 21, 2005

(04-21) 11:55 PDT SACRAMENTO, (AP) --

The California Senate doesn't believe it's sporting to allow hunters to remotely kill animals with a computer mouse, camera and gun.

By a 25-6 vote, senators approved a bill Thursday that would ban use of Internet sites that allow hunters to fire guns at real animals by clicking a computer mouse hundreds of miles away.

The measure, by Sen. Debra Bowen, D-Redondo Beach, is a response to an Internet target shooting site in Texas that announced plans to allow hunting via the Internet.

Bowen said most people, including several hunting groups, were "horrified and disgusted" at the idea of computer-assisted hunting.

"There's some things you do because it's the right thing to do and it's simple to solve the problem," she said of her legislation.

But Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth, R-La Mesa, complained that the bill was "rapid reaction to something that's barely even occurred yet" and that lawmakers ought to pay more attention to other problems, like protecting children from child predators.

"We ought to take a serious look at what our priorities are," he said.

Hollingsworth's comments offended Sen. Elaine Alquist, D-Santa Clara, who said the Legislature has done "quite a bit to protect our children. Protecting our children is not a Republican or Democratic issue.... It's an issue for all of us," she said.

Bowen's bill, which now moves to the Assembly, would prohibit use of computer-assisted hunting sites, bar such sites from operating in California and prohibit the importation or exportation of any animal or part of an animal killed using computer-assisted hunting.

Bowen said lawmakers in 14 other states and Congress are considering similar bills.

Is it just going to be against CA law to USE the site, or are they going to block the hunting sites from access within CA?

I wouldn't think that blocking access to remote control hunting sites would really be feasible. This is one site. When they block access to that site, then another site will pop up. Then another. So they're going to need an agency to keep track of remote control hunting sites. You know that some African country is going to see the potential for this and have a remote control safari site before long. Are they going block access to that as well? Tax money well spent, right there.

"What do you do for a living?"

"I block remote control hunting websites from use in California with taxpayer money"

And if it's just going to be against the law to visit the sites, then who keeps track of that? Are we going to have task forces watching the internet traffic to a remote control hunting site watchlist?

"Red Alert! Scramble the bombers!!! We've got a remote control hunter!!!"

It's stupid issues like this that should never need to be addressed by ANY government. It's not "sporting" to hunt remotely? WTF do you care anyway? It's not "legal" to drive 90 up the Garden State Parkway, but that law, much like any law restricting people from doing anything they want, doesn't get much attention payed to it.

With technology like this, I can see it applied in remote controlled assassinations or other terroristic events. If they can shoot a rhino then why not a person? I think that too often our laws are either too fast to hit the presses or too slow to keep up with technology. It seems like they see the potential for danger and are trying to act now, before it is applied in a more dangerous manner. They just don't know how to do it, yet.

Not a bad thought, just not thought out completly. We will have to see where this leads.

Call forward to LD number

Fine by me; I've never been a fan of the idea of internet hunting.

I can see some merit to that train of thought. Set the sites up in the death row exercise yards, sell the rights to the first shots on eBay, give the money to the victims of the soon-to-be-dispatched murderers, rapists, child molesters, etc.

That is a bit extreme. Someone make take your thought and set something up outside say a mall, or a church or worse yet…a school.
I’m not sure that would fly.

Anyone remembering the Bruce Willis movie The Jackal? That was a pretty cool setup but a bit elborate when you could just set up a mortar tube and build some mortars.
