LANSING, Mich. -- A Michigan health care company has fired four of its employees for refusing to take a test to determine whether they smoke cigarettes.

The company enacted a new policy this month, allowing workers to be fired if they smoke, even if the smoking takes place after-hours, or at home.

The founder of Weyco Inc. said the company doesn't want to pay the higher health care costs associated with smoking.

An official of the company -- which administers health benefits -- estimated that 18 to 20 of its 200 employees were smokers when the policy was first announced in 2003. As many as 14 of them quit smoking before the policy went into effect.

On the company's Web site, it states:

Weyco Inc. is a non-smoking company that strongly supports its employees in living healthy lifestyles.

Can't the workers claim "addiction" and sue the company? If nothing else, they should be grandfathered in. Or the company should offer quitting aides (gum/patch/lung removal surgery)

I'm just saying, everyone's always up in arms about how it's an addiction and tobacco companies are evil etc. etc. and those people are usually the same ones that say smoking is the reason health care costs keep rising. (Even though smokers DIE much sooner than people who live to be old age and need regular doctor visits, medication, hip replacements etc. for another 30 years.) So it seems to me that someone somewhere is being rather hypocritical.

I think that insurance companies should just say "From now on, if you have emphyzema, lung cancer, athsma etc. and you have nicotine in your blood stream, then we won't pay and you can now die."

That might make people quit smoking.

blah blah blah.

Happy Wednesday.
