LA County Discovers $337 Million In Unexpected Surplus
Some Critics See Surplus As Failure To Oversee Finances

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County supervisors were pleasantly surprised to learn that a budget review showed the county had an unexpected $337 million surplus this year.

County officials believe several years of belt tightening paid off. Much of the extra money came from salaries budgeted but never spent amid a hiring freeze and money earmarked for supplies but never purchased.

They say the extra cash will be used for employee pay raises, facility improvements and an improved communications system for law enforcement.

Some critics say the surprise surplus showed the county supervisors' failure to oversee their finances.

They're angry the supervisors had earlier threatened to close parks, libraries and medical services because of budget restrictions.

** Let's see. That would buy about how many keg's of frosty brew? **

That's 82,953,840 gallons of brew!
What could hold 82 million gallons?

I'm sure I could find a storage tank for it but like my 400 gallon diesel storage 'tank' it probably wouldn't be up to code and that butt munching bottom feeding code inspector would make me dispose of it in a certified manner meaning that I would have to invite Sig, John, Bob, that guy in the tech section who always answers my questions and a few of my buddies to an extended drinking party.

Since I work for the county I'll mention that most of the money is 'funny' money or virutal money... it's very difficult and complicate concept that I haven't quite figured out yet.
