Elderly woman dies, son injured in crash

Audrey Hariton of Pompano Beach was still reeling Monday from the news: Her 90-year-old neighbor, ''the sweet, lovely Italian lady,'' Hariton called her, had died in a fiery sports car wreck.
The neighbor, Maria Brunetti, was driving a 2009 Dodge Challenger on Sunday when she lost control and slammed into a pole at Andrews Avenue and McNab Road, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
The Challenger had been purchased Thursday, BSO spokesman Mike Jachles said.
Brunetti's passenger, her 47-year-old son Peter, was in serious condition at North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach.
Maria Brunetti and her son had lived together on the second floor of a building in the Cypress Bend complex in the 2200 block of North Cypress Bend Drive. Before the Challenger, Maria Brunetti drove a Cadillac, Hariton said, and her son drove a pickup truck.
The crash occurred about 10 a.m. as the Challenger headed south on Andrews Avenue approaching McNab Road, BSO said.
Homicide detectives believe that Brunetti accelerated instead of braking when she tried to turn east onto McNab, and lost control.
The Challenger slammed into a concrete pole and caught fire with Brunetti and her son trapped inside, BSO said. Both were wearing seat belts.
Bystanders pulled the pair from the burning vehicle before fire-rescue arrived and took them to the hospital, BSO said. Maria Brunetti was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The Challenger was destroyed. The odometer showed it had been driven just 151 miles.
