911 operator fired for cursing after report

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

(05-14) 20:00 PDT Nashville, Tenn. (AP) --
A Nashville 911 operator has been fired after he was recorded saying that he didn't "give a s---" about what happened to a woman who had just called to report her ex-boyfriend was threatening her.
Emergency Communications Center spokeswoman Amanda Sluss said Wednesday that Frank Roth was in training during the February incident and was fired a month later.
Roth made the comments after promising police would arrive soon for a woman who called saying her ex-boyfriend held her at knifepoint and later was threatening her.
After hanging up with her but while still being recorded, he said, "I really don't give a s--- what happens to you."
Sluss said incident is not reflective of how 911 operators treat callers and that "a series of errors" led to the three-hour delay in response to the emergency call.
"Certainly this particular caller didn't receive the service she deserved," Sluss said. "This is not indicative of how our employees treat citizens. It's not something that should have been said. It's not what we train our employees to do."
Nashville TV station WTVF first reported the story after one of its reporters obtained the 911 recording.

According to CNN he was not fired for that comment but because he failed his final exam.

911 dispatcher gets pink slip after cursing caller

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- A Nashville, Tennessee, 911 operator has been fired after he was recorded saying that he didn't "give a s---" about what happened to a woman who had just called to report her ex-boyfriend was threatening her.
Sluss says the incident is not reflective of how 911 operators treat callers and that "a series of errors" led to the delay in response to Sheila Jones.
"Certainly this particular caller didn't receive the service she deserved," Sluss said. "This is not indicative of how our employees treat citizens. It's not something that should have been said. It's not what we train our employees to do."
It took police three hours to reach the scene after the first call.
Nashville TV station WTVF first reported the story after one of its reporters obtained the 911 recording.

Looks like CNN changed their story!!!!!

Interesting because that is not what they said six hours ago when I first heard the story. They mentioned the recording (and played it on air, edited slightly), then interviewed the woman and went back to the 911 supervisor who stated that is not why he was fired.

when on the phone, always assume you are being recorded, even if you are on hold. About the same as walking down the street, don't do anything you would not want on film as you just never know what will pop up on u-tube.

Whilst on hold I do sometimes make comments, especially if I've already been on hold for longer than they've said I would be, although I usually do try to keep it polite as you never know when someone will actually pick up the phone.

I wonder if the lady will sue the department. Also, would they be held responsible for her death had she been stabbed to death?

But if I were being held at knife point and the cops didnt show up after a few minutes, I would call back until they sent someone.

So she never heard this until the story came out.

Me thinks the issue of waiting 3 hours might be a bit more of concern.

The best part was watching the local broadcast (I'm in Nashville).
The reporter sprung a new tidbit of information on the woman. What exactly were the officers who would have responded had they been notified doing when the calls came in?...

running traffic duty.

Priceless.

I'm thinking maybe the dipsh*t operator should sue the recording device manufacturer for not recognizing a disconnect.
