Teen May Have To Pay For Wild Party
Australian Teen May Have To Pay Up After Police Break Up Wild Party With More Than 500 People

MELBOURNE, Australia, Jan. 14, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(AP) An Australian teenager who threw a wild party while his parents were away could face a hefty fine after police said Monday they might charge him for the cost of breaking the gathering up.

More than 500 people turned up to the party Saturday in the southern city of Melbourne, and some of them went on a rampage when police responded to complaints about the noise.

Police cars were pelted with glass bottles and nearby houses and gardens were vandalized before at least 30 officers, a helicopter and the dog squad were able to end the melee at the suburban home. No one was arrested.

Victoria state Police Commissioner Christine Nixon said it would be difficult to prove exactly who caused the estimated $18,000 in damage, but the youth may hold ultimate responsibility because he threw the party.

"He needs to learn a lesson, and one way or another we will be making sure that happens," Nixon told reporters at a news conference.

The 16-year-old told local media he had no regrets about the party because he believed invited guests had no role in the ruckus. Asked if he would do it again, the youth said he would do it again this weekend if his parents were not due home from a vacation this week.

Victoria's acting Premier Rob Hulls said the youth's parents had no idea about the party and were horrified when police told them what had happened.

+++++++++++++++

"The 16-year-old told local media he had no regrets about the party because he believed invited guests had no role in the ruckus. Asked if he would do it again, the youth said he would do it again this weekend if his parents were not due home from a vacation this week."

Seems like he didn't learn a thing. I wonder how many hours of picking up litter it would take to get to $18k?

You also have to wonder WTF the parents were thinking leaving a 16 year old home alone.

Must depend on the kid, not age. My parents left my (then) 22 year old brother alone and I got a call from him then the police saying a party got out of hand at the family homestead and could I come over and help manage the crowd out of the house.

don't know if mom and dad ever heard about it. I recomended he tell them but kept it quiet myself.

I was charged (fined) $178 dollars when the Sheriff and Fire Department had to come break up my late night welding party in the backyard - when I asked the Sheriff exactly why I was being fined he pointed to the 3 pump trucks, 1 paramedic unit and 3 squad cars blocking the street and said "Someone has to pay for all of this" so I say make the 18,000 fine stick on this little sh!t.

You should have said "You did not need to bring all these cars and trucks, that was your choice not mine. Now had I known your were planing on dropping by I would have gotten more beer. Now kindly move those cars and trucks you brought with you!"

At first I read 'wedding party' not welding and wondered what you were hiding from the current gf

That must have been one h311 of a party if they thought they needed that much gear based on a called in complaint.

heh i can't believe this made it to the news overseas. it's blown over down here, but the kid is still a wanker. the latest story is that he got beaten up, but they're saying it may have been staged for publicity.

I think they get bored or paid more for rolling all of that crap, when my old man was around and had his medical problems they would send pump trucks, a ladder truck (neighborhood full of single story houses) and finally a paramedic and ambulance, the best part of it is that the other stuff would block the street so the ambulance guys would have to push the stretcher up the hill.

Sometimes they take the ladder truck out in the small neighborhoods for practice.

guess it keeps the trucks lubricated and staff on their toes. I always wondered why fire shows up first when someone calls for an ambulance.

Up here, they used to be one big happy family then someone made the decision to extract the ambulance service from the fire side and build all new stations for them. go figure.
