You know as I look at this PBX room:

I can't help but wonder, if Telecom Guys like us will remember when PBX's use to take up whole rooms... Like computer guys remember Main Frames taking up whole buildings!

So we will go from above to a Server that handles all the voice for a large enterprise system....

What do you think? How many more years before Large Cabinet Systems will be replaced by pure IP and Stackable Blade servers etc...?

Won't be long.
It's already happened once.
Remember the step switches? You had an entire building to house a switch and it was like stepping inside a grandfather clock. All that stuff and all that noise packed wall to wall. We replaced those steppers with a few rows of DMS or even a few cabinets of remote equipment off a DMS and look how empty the place got. I was always amazed to go back to those offices after the DMS was cut over and the tear out had been completed on the stepper. There'd be the DMS standing in an other wise empty building.

I'm with you there. A three story Central Office with the new electronic switch occupying 1/8 of one floor. The biggest device in the building was the frame which hasn't changed much, at least the last time I was in a CO it looked pretty much the same. It dwarfed the CO switch sitting next to it.

Was just in a meeting with Nortel. Things keep getting smaller. I can see replacing our 5 columns with one rack some time in the future.

I thought that part of the site was going to go away so I haven't uploaded any photos to it in a long time - weird seeing pictures of some of my comm rooms as they were several years ago, also interesting to see how other folks install things.

Those pictures bring back some memories (and the previous comments too). As an electronics design engineer I had the job of installing my initial prototype boards into an exchange building (BT) and the amount of empty floorspace was amazing. They were adding offices to the front of the building whilst I was there in the space which the switch had previously taken up.

Also strange seeing the Opt11 cabinets installed at the top of the backboard - we used to do that until our veritically challenged people lobbied and we had to move them all down 2 n half feet so they could reach them without a ladder or stool.
