Location: A Blue State Rep Power: 12 ![]() ![]() | Idiots Courted Today's assinine lawsuit, filed in fashions reminiscent of a Michael Crichton novel: California's attorney general is suing the six largest U.S. and Japanese automakers for damages related to greenhouse gas emissions. No it isn't. The article neglects to mention that Attorney General Lockyer, a Democrat, is running for Treasurer and obviously intends to score the votes of ignorant hippies. Mayor Daley pulled a similar stint, spending six years and the City of Chicago's resources on a similar lawsuit against gun manufacturers, a lawsuit that was eventually thrown out by the Illinois Supreme Court in a unanimous decision. If Daley believed that the unlawful use of handguns cost the city hundreds of millions of dollars, as he contended, he should've billed the people who used the handguns unlawfully. Likewise, if Lockyer believes that cars are creating a public nuisance in California, he should bill the drivers. Of course, neither of them will, because recovering the losses aren't the real issue. Winning the electoral sympathy of the desperately uninformed, however, is, and many of those people are or are closely associated with people who would be receiving bills under the alternate scheme, something unlikely to earn their admiration and support. The only public nuisance here are people like Daley and Lockyer. Update: Heh. If I were those car companies, I'd close any plants that manufacture vehicles in the state (starting with this one near San Francisco.) I would also discontinue buying any parts made by California companies.Funny, I think I'd do the same thing. ![]()

Location: @home Rep Power: 8 ![]() | They just want to justify the cash grabbing polution testing they do on the cars already. I just had a discussion with one of my staff around the uslessness of the the testing as even their own documentation says you may pass one time and not another with out doing anything to your car due to environmental conditions. Grunt, rant, rave, get generally pissed off over it when ever I think about it.

Hopefully this guy has given up all forms of transportation but they all contribute to some degree.

Location: @home Rep Power: 8 ![]() | That is about the only good thing the testing has to offer. Takes the real bad offenders off the road. to follow up on my previous comments. They did make it so newer cars only have to go through every two years as they are less likely to be offending. The down side is they charge you twice as much on those visits. ($24 / year or $48 for the newer vehicles) <mini rant> THEY DO THE SAME TEST FOR EVERYONE! THEY SHOULD NOT BE CHARGING TWICE AS MUCH FOR THE SAME LABOUR!! THIS IS WHAT MAKES ME FEEL IT IS MORE OF A CASH GRAB THAN A PRODUCTIVE MECHANISM TO REDUCE AIR POLUTION <mini rant over>

The prices have been going up over the years but the testing has become more and more complicated (wheel dyno, gas cap, EGR, EEC codes, etc) along with it.

Location: @home Rep Power: 8 ![]() | guess I can't complain too much but still.... They started testing the diesels in 2005 up here. Not a load test but they measure the density of the exhaust some how. good thing is, if you manage to register your vehicle at 5000 kg you don't have to test as it bumps you up just enough to be out of the testing band. Unfortunaly, your insurance goes up a little (but could be worth paying just to not have to wait in a 30 - 60 minute line up when going for testing and to relieve the stress of the passing the test or not).
