Arrow Linux Versions: Ubuntu Review

Hey guys,
Just wondering how many of you are running a Linux machine, either at home or work.

I have used Red Hat7,9 and Mandriva, but just stumbled upon http://www.ubuntu.com/

I know the name sounds really wierd but so far this is the best Linux OS I have used. If you are a windows users everything falls right into place. Installing it was a breeze and using it has been even easier.

It has found all the hardware on my machines without problems, connects to the internet, gives me some great features, CD Burner Software, Music and DVD software, Email, Websurfing, Picture Software etc...Pretty much everything I use on a regular basis.

What makes it so great is it Snaptic Package installer, Basically it gives you a list of software you can install with just a check mark. It automatically installs them on your machine and your good to go.

It makes using Linux so much easier!

If you guys haven't tried a linux distribution I would encourage you to try this one. If you have an old PC laying around, it would be a perfect way for you to learn it/play with it.

Just download the "ISO" image, burn it to a CD using EZ CD creator or simliar so it burns it as an ISO image, then boot up your PC with it.

It installs pretty quickly and easily.

Lots of neat games on it as well.

just my .02 review.

Ubuntu has had good reviews in Linux Journal and is highly recommended. I have not tried it because I have Mandriva 10.2 installed on a machine at home.

Sounds good, im gonna have to give it a try.

I've been using knoppix, which boots completely off of a cd, when I need my linux fix.

I hope its dual boot, and wont mess up my windows installation????

Marty, I orginally installed Mandriva 10.2 as well, but decided to try Ubuntu on a whim and haven't gone back since!

Shanks,
"I've been using knoppix, which boots completely off of a cd, when I need my linux fix."

Ubuntu has a Live CD as well, If you like you could try that as well.

"I hope its dual boot, and wont mess up my windows installation????"

There is a partition manager that comes with it so you should be ok, Ubuntu has great documentation and very active message boards. Check both of them out and see why its so good.

When you do get it installed, I would love to hear your feedbacks/reviews of it.

Ubuntu is nice, but I've honestly found Fedora Core 4 to be about the best thing for software and hardware support. There are just so many things out there for Fedora/Red Hat that it's ridiculous.

If I ever wanted to start over with Linux, I'd probably use Debian. Very stable and a ton of support from what I hear.

I have played with Red Hat and Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) and found Mandriva is easier to install, it has a friendlier install menu. Since Mandriva is based on Red Hat, it will run anything offered for Red Hat.
