Gunbattle inside speeding car on I-70 kills 2

Two men were killed when an argument turned into a gunbattle inside a car
speeding along Interstate 70 near Lambert Field early Saturday.

A witness told police that the four-door sedan traveling westbound about 1:20
a.m. began swerving near I-170. The driver lost control and crashed into a
concrete median wall in front of the airport's East Terminal.

Seconds later the witness heard gunfire and then saw several people run from
the car into the airport, police said.

Woodson Terrace police Chief Robert Dowling said the details of the incident
were murky.

"We're still trying to sort through it all," he said.

Police found one man, who had been a back-seat passenger, dead inside the car.
They identified him as Kelly Qualls, 32, of Jennings.

Officers later found another body on the shoulder of the eastbound lanes just
over the concrete median wall. Investigators said that victim, Mizett Gordon,
31, of north St. Louis County, was probably driving the car when it crashed.

Airport police arrested three other men a short time later who matched the
description of the other passengers in the car. None of those had gunshot
wounds.

Woodson Terrace police were investigating the shooting. Authorities believe the
two dead men may have been shooting at one another.

Police recovered two guns at the scene. They were not sure if both had been
fired that morning.

The three men in custody were being interviewed Saturday. No charges had been
filed. Police said the men were cooperating, but their stories were not
consistent.

The carload of people had been in University City before the shooting. The men
in custody told police they were on their way to a car rental business near the
airport to rent a vehicle.
