We have had a free open wireless access at our motel for three years now. We also have a hardwired machine with free access in the lobby open to anyone who stops by.

No problems yet. I notice people are getting braver - I used to see them parked across the street in the grocery store lot - you could see the blue glow from the screens - but now they come and park in my lot.

Frankly, I don't really care about the bandwidth that gets used. It's not a problem to the point things are slowing down, as most people are reasonable about using it sensibly.

Of course, in the winter, when the motel is closed and I'm 'gone south" (hence the username) I use other people's open wifi, principally Holiday Inn and Jameson Inn, but whatever is available.

We see it the same way we see Open Source...

I think I would be more concerned that they are in your parking lot when you have paying customers they should be reserved for.

Some hotels I have been in have the free service but the management gives a one-time code the clients use when logging in that registers your MAC address to the server for the durration of your stay.

My understanding is that open bandwidth is free to use. It only becomes illegal if you have to hack a password to use it or you use it to break into the computer that is providing the bandwidth.

At home I lock it down with a new SSID and password with no broadcasting and MAC addressing. Around my home there are four unlocked networks broadcasting.

The only thing I can't do is turn off the broadcast of SSID Have a couple of older devices that won't work unless they see it.

Marty, you are mistaken. It is a criminal offense to access a private network without permission. Security measures are irrelevant to that point of the law.

Further complicating things is that some people simply don't mind sharing their private network with whomever (as appears to be the case in gonesouth's posting). The problem is that there is probably an agreement between the owner of the private network and the ISP that forbids this. Otherwise, I could get together with nearby neighbors and all pool together on one wireless network accesing one broadband router. Comcast is now hosting traffic from 5 households, but collecting revenue based on one house. I don't know if this is a criminal violation (I doubt it), but it certainly would be a contract violation and elligible for a civil suit from the ISP.

One of the private networks by my house has an SSID of "Death and Destruction". They probably don't have too much of a problem, at least I will leave them alone.

Hmm.... I think I need to consider changing my SSID (even though it's hidden!)

In our case we have the public machine in the lobby and the wifi on a separate subnet, with firewalls in between, so it would be easier for a hacker to either get to someone on the net or another wifi user than get to us.

Incidentally the public machine is government sponsored, so I can't see having a problem. Pretty hard to convict somebody for doing something they could do legally by walking inside..........

Of course our laws are different, and from the sound of it, better.
