NASCAR announced Tuesday it would start policing bump drafting by assigning spotters around the massive 2 1/2-mile Daytona International Speedway. Drivers who are cited for bump drafting, a tactic where a car slams into the rear of another car to keep it's momentum, will be black-flagged and penalized.

The prohibition will be tested for the first time in Thursday's Gatorade Duel at Daytona, the two 150-mile qualifying races that set the starting grid for Sunday.

The reigning Nextel Cup champion, Stewart publicly complained about the frequent bump drafting at Daytona after last Sunday's Budweiser Shootout.

But some drivers do not believe the threat of "drive through" penalties will not stop bump drafting.

"Honestly, no," three-time Daytona 500 winner Dale Jarrett said. "You can talk about it all that you want, but to say that you're going to put somebody on the inside or outside of the race track and monitor bump drafting at the right or wrong places, I don't know how you can do that.

I bet somebody gets screwed in that deal

For those who don't follow... Stewart basically said "Somebody is going to get killed out here" following the Bud shootout.

The biggest issue that I see with the bump draft is the rookies who don't know how to bump draft correctly; you have to be very sure of what the guy in front of you is going to do before you bump draft, if you bump draft in in turn or right when a guy is going to make a move you have an accident on your hands.

I personally would like to see them do away with the whole restrictor plate thing... but that's me, I like real racing and carnage not watching a 190mph train. Although it does make things interesting.

I hear the trucks are running a different style plate that give the drivers some upper end play power without being insane about it.

I'm with Slag. take off the plates and make them use the peddle in the middle if they are too fast, and I don't think you would see them stacked up like that. They would be able to slingshot like the old days. They have had the plates on since '89(?), don't you think that the areo and handling have improved since then??? They are running slower now than when they first started the plate rules.

If they take the plate out you'll just find that new rules are added to limit the speeds. Just take a look at F1, smaller wings each year to reduce downforce, narrower tyres to reduce grip and this year they've finally done it an reduced the engine size from 3 litre V10 to 2.5 litre V8. Al these changes have been made to slow the cars down, nothing to do with how good a spectator sport it should be.

Allow not ready codes on 3905 dislpay?

F1 is slowly jumping the shark in my opinion; there was the tire thing over here last year and now the engine thing and so on. I never was a huge fan because it's so hard to follow being in different countries all the time.

One of the things that has made NASCAR so popular in the US is that it's consistently broad-casted, you get 3 races for 20 odd weeks out of the year and they are pretty much all on at the same time on the same day with the exception of some of the few night races or off day races.

IRL is sort of the same way as F1 for me but they have Danica to ride on the coat tails of for now and it's hard to miss with her in every other damn TV commercial that is remotely related to automotive stuff.

Much like the shootout I'm sure SPEED will replay the highlights at least 20 times before the main event.

Weren't you just down that way? I'm surprised you didn't stick around for the whole thing.

So Tony, what was that again about aggressive driving?

Have to admit that I lost a little bit of respect for him as a person over that little stunt with Kenseth; after last seasons Kenseth / Harvick fiasco I've come to expect the playground rules (he pushed me first) stuff from Kenseth but not Tony. I don't mind seeing emotion from the drivers but that could've turned out a lot worse had one of the other cars made contact with Kenseth as he came back across the track... backwards. Personally I think they should settle that crap in the pits after the race... it would still make for good TV.

If this is anything like last season Tony had better keep one eye in his mirror because Kenseth hasn't forgotten about it, hopefully the Roush folks can keep a short leash on him.

This a$$holia stuff from Tony is one of the reasons I never cared for the guy, hellva driver but a real sh!thead when it comes to people, fans and at some point other competitors.

Just last season he he seemed to be changing a little bit and was almost a likable guy from some of the random stuff I saw. Naturally they give him his meds before sticking him up for an interview so I don't count those moments.
