BACKHOES VERSUS TELECOM: The backhoe is telecom's single biggest enemy. A new study from the Common Ground Alliance, a U.S. industry group, estimates that in 2004 there were over 675,000 cases of damage to various types of underground facilities: 35% involved backhoes, and 27% affected telecom equipment.

** Another recent report, from the Alliance for
Telecommunications Industry Solutions, says that cable
dig-ups caused 57% of U.S. network outages in the past 12
years. The number of outages has been declining, but the
number of customers affected and the average length of
service interruption have increased.

Happened to us a few months ago (there was a post with pictures) some ignorant Mexican with a special fiber seeking backhoe broke one of our conduits and manged to snag the inner-duct and pull about 3 ft of it out destroying the LIU in the phone closet along with taking down service for a day. The best part of it is that he knew right where the conduit was as he had been digging (and hitting) around it all week.

Another part of the problem is some of these cocky backhoe operators, I recently had an electrician tell me that my buried conduits weren't a problem because his backhoe guy can pick up an egg with a backhoe... I explained that I don't want him thinking that anywhere near my conduits.

This is why I liked being a microwave / wireless guy.

Microwave links are fine until someone parks a trailer between your transmitter and receiver.

That would be one low microwave link... I don't think we're allowed to build them that low due to various feelings about microwaves and the human body.

I know there used to be one link (before they moved it) that pointed out of a ground floor window in a hillside building (owned by British Telecom ). The techies kept wondering why they had intermittent communications especially at the weekends, the answer was that there are more hill-walkers at the weekend than during the week.

Sounds like one of those temporary things someone forgot about. Happens at times but usually we keep the antennas up nice and high so about the only problems we run into are trees and the occasional building that will get erected in the path.

Can't knock free loot...

The last time I called before I dug they sent some newbie jacka$$ out with a set of outdated plans. Practically had them digging right through my spiffy $70,000 ground.
