| More commonly reffered to as haunting if you believe in such things. Mine is the case of the self opening window; given that there are other stories very similar to it I belive that a logical explanation exists that was never compeltly researched. Back in late 90's shortly after leaving the military I took a job with one of the large cellular companies in LA as a field service tech. One of my first jobs was a new site construction on the 6th floor of an old (late 18 - early 1900s era) government office building, this building is considered a historical landmark and many of the exterior features have been left in intact while the inside was gutted and brought up to code; one such feature that was left in place was the old style vertical swinging windows... the ones that swing up and down and have a large handle to secure them when closed. Since opening windows are deemed a safety issue these days most of them were simply tack welded shut, in some cases the tack welds broke allowing the windows to open if someone turned the handle, the latch mechanisms were the old style compression wedge type latches, prone to wear and becoming lose. The room that we were given to build a cell site in had a such window and I remember that the first time I went there for a pre-acceptance QA that it was open. As things in the cell site construction progressed that window kept getting left open, it went as far as one of the seniors dragging me in front of the boss saying that I was neglecting my duties (pleasant place to work) when I clearly documented closing the damn window. The initial (logical) explanation for us was the one of the contractors doing the install was leaving it open. Shortly after comissioning the site I returned and wired in all of the alarms, this particular company took alarming seriously so everything from glass break to motion to window opening to door jam alarms were installed and tested with the NOC. The next morning at about 2am I get paged by the on-call tech (a senior) telling me that he got paged with a window intrusion alarm from the same site that we had been having our tiff about he also noted that the NOC had no recorded of a TRACcess entry or any contractor activity in the work log for this location. He also pointed out that since I had a track record of leaving the window open that it was my job to go out and close it. I arrived on site at about 2am... 2am on a Sunday in this part of town means that I pretty much alone with the exception of a bum sleeping off a mad-dog induced coma in front of the back door. A walk through the parking garage showed only one car which appeared to have been parked / abandoned for quite sometime. Upon entering the building the first thing I noted was that I suddenly felt a little edgy for no real good reason, usually dark drafty hallways don't bother me but this place was giving me the heebeies and I had just walked in. When I entered the cell site room I found the window was indeed open again just like the alarm log said, being tired / grumpy and somewhat pissed I slammed it shut, cranked the handle down and left. I had just pulled into my driveway when my pager went off again... same very agitated senior tech had gotten paged again for the same window instrusion alarm at the place I had just left, the logs showed nobody coming or going since I had been there. Aside from the above mentioned grumpiness / tiredness and overall crappy disposition I'm getting a little freaked out. When I went back in the building my mind really started playing tricks with me, the dark hallways and the whoooing of the wind going through the building was making me believe that everything I heard was something other than what it was. This time after I closed and latched the window I sat down and watched for awhile; having never sat in this room and done nothing before I overlooked the amount of vibration that was present, some of it seemed like mechanically induced vibration but everyonce in awhile there was another harmonic present that when coupled with the mechanical virbration was causing the handle to slowly unlatch, it would get to a point where the wind from the ocean would start to get under the window and vibrate it even more untill the worn out wedge latch would pop open and the window aided by the wind would open about 6 inches. To solve the short term problem I closed the window and zipped tied the handle down, since then there were no more mysterious window openings. On my way out to my truck to get tools I noted that there was an exception amount of low frequency vibration in the building, moreso than what is found in most buildings. I returned during daylight (Sunday) to finalize my window repairs and noticed that the level of virbration I could feel in the walls was far less than than I felt earlier in the morning, the outside wind speed was not as strong as it had been in the morning either. To this day I don't have a good explanation for the strange vibration in the building during the morning hours; I like to think that the answer lies with the buildings cooling system. Out here installation of chill tanks in large buildings has become common practice, the theory is that you run all of your chillers (ice makers) in early morning hours, chill your tanks and then pump the chilled water through the building during buisness hours and usually only have to start one or two chillers during hours to keep things comfortable. When doing this the local power utilities give customers discounts on electricity since it reduces load on the grid during peak hours. Enough chillers running at the same time could setup a vibration similiar to the one I was feeling, I've felt buildings vibrate from two chillers running that hadn't been mounted correctly. But who knows? I never did go back to poke around and see if I was right. From what I know now it's uncommon to run chillers on a morning when nobody is going to be in the building, even on hot weekends out here I've never seen the cooling system on or heard chillers running. I still don't believe the place is haunted even though I heard stories other strange things happening there, usually in the early hours of the morning and always when a tech was working alone. | ||||||||

| Routing The day after my dad died, I had just woken up and my shade was open and I looked out my window and he was standing there looking at me and his mom was with him. It really freaked me out and he has not appeared to me again, but he does send messages to me in dreams at least once a week. My dad has visited my mom several times. My mom makes bread, usually 15 or 20 at a time and she left four of them cooling on the table and went to put more in the oven and when she came back they were all standing on end. That is something silly my dad would do to make my mom laugh. These are not as exciting as slags, but in the spirit I thought I would share | ||||||||
