Slag...they could use your help...

EDMONTON - Jane Amurao woke up early Thursday morning with a pain in her chest and what she thought was a lingering dream about being hit by a stone.

The reality was much worse - a large calibre bullet had come through her ceiling and struck her just over the heart as she slept.

After going through the roof of her home and the ceiling of her bedroom, the bullet had lost most of its momentum and only bruised her chest.

Amurao's husband Benjamin was awakened at the same time, around 3:30 a.m., when debris and dust from the ceiling fell on him.

"He put on the light and there was a bullet in our bed and a hole in our ceiling," said a shaken Jane Amurao. "I'm so scared. I am just lucky that I'm still alive."

The 48-year-old woman said she was shaking as she and her husband called 911. She's hoping the shot was completely random, an accident.

Police investigators looked at the bullet hole in the roof and bedroom, but aren't yet sure what the exact trajectory of the shot was.

They also don't know who fired the shot. One of their three children was still awake when the bullet hit, but told his parents he didn't hear anything outside.

Investigators are checking to see if there were any reports of gunshots in the area around the same time, but have so far come up empty.

"No one heard or saw anything, not a thing," said Const. Elli McEvoy, who went door-to-door in the neighbourhood talking to neighbours. "Everyone was quite surprised, they said nothing ever happens there."

Jane Amurao did not require medical treatment, but she did go to hospital on Thursday afternoon for precautionary reasons and her own peace of mind
