British Lawmakers To Vote Whether To Ban Smacking Children

LONDON -- British lawmakers are voting Tuesday on whether to ban parents from smacking their children.
The government is opposed to an outright ban. Prime Minister Tony Blair's government fears it'll be accused of intruding into family affairs. It wants to preserve an 1860 court ruling that allows parents to use "reasonable chastisement."
Two parliamentary committees contend that's used too often to defend violent behavior that goes beyond a smack. A number of members of the ruling Labor Party are calling for any form of physical punishment to be outlawed.
Officials said the legislation would allow authorities to prosecute violent parents more easily. Several other European countries already consider physical punishment of children illegal.

John, remember this is the UK. In the US to "smack" someone means to pound them with your fist. In the UK (and Canada plus other 'colonies') a "smack" means just that, a smack or slap (e.g. That felon got off lightly with barely a smack on the wrist.).

They are referring to the banning of spanking and light corporal punishment which is downright ASININE! Can you imagine going to jail for restraining a tired and screaming todldler or slapping the hand of a small child who was about use a Royal Dolton figurine as a hammer? Friggin' bunch of liberal asses!

So no, you cannot "smack your kid around" in London... but you can giveve them a "smack" upside the head to keep them in line. :P

Oh, like the old saying "this is going to hurt me more than it's going to hurt you..." Or how about this one..."go get the belt/spoon(or insert object here)..." That's a good one. Make the kid get the weapon so his parent can inflict the punishment.

Love it, Slag!

[RANT]
In all seriousness, there is pretty clear line between abuse and discipline and 99% of the world stays on correct side of that line. Personally, some of the things that the liberal-minded child raising gurus espouse are as much neglect as the things that the ultra-conservatives promote may be seen as abuse. Alas, North America (Canada too) seems to write laws that punish the 99% for the abuses of the 1%... for examples, see momentum in recent Gun Legisation (in any Province or State). [/Rant]
