Ok. I recently switched from my good old 2626 to a 3904. I had a good old Plantronics wireless headset with an automatic handset lifter.

Now I plug my trusty headset into the 3904 headset jack and it works great except... I can no longer answer calls using the headset.

I find it interesting that the 3904 is smart enough to see if the headset is on or off hook: If I press the DN and the headset is off hook (talk) then the call/dialtone goes to my headset. If I press the DN an the headset is on hook then call/dialtone goes to Handsfree.

But the 3904 does not seem smart enough to use its knowledege of the headset to answer incoming calls when I switch the headset from on hook to off hook (talk).

I am just wondering if I am missing something or do I just need a better/smarter headset than my Plantronics CS10? Do I need to program something differently in the 3904 set?

I am leaning towards the belief that this interesting inconsistency is a design "feature".

3900's and Headsets

I recently just bought the 3904's. I like them. I have seen two different versions of the 3904. One has three spots to plug in a handset, headset and line cord. The other version, has only the handset and line cord connectors. If your 3904 has the three spots, try plugging your headset into the handset spot. Not sure if this will work, or if you already tried. Thought it may be worth a shot. Good luck! I'll ask a vendor that I'm meeting this afternoon on the 3904's. Maybe she will know. If so, I'll post back to you tomorrow.

My phone has three jacks: line jack, handset and headset. I use the headset jack for the Plantronics headset. As I said, the phone is smart enough to know if the the headset is set to talk (off hook) or not because it won't let me switch to the headset unless I have pressed the talk button to take it off hook. But it won't pick up calls that are ringing when I press the talk button (thus taking the headset "off hook"). I need to either press the DN, handsfree or the headset button or take the handset off the cradle to answer the call.

Since the handset lifter does not fit on the 3900 series I cannot answer calls using the wireless headset any more. And even if the lifter worked it would defeat the use of the headset jack because it would then have to plug in-line with the handset in order to work.

I assume that the ultimate answer will be "If you want to use that headset to anser calls then you will have to purchase the ATA adapter and plug the headset into that so incoming calls can be answered via the analogue ATA."

<SIGH!>

I will be interested in hearing what your vendor says.

Yes, and according to the literature HFA is only required on the 2616.

Ok, then what about in the options list on the phone itself. Options button bottom 6 keys, next to the headset button. It should be option 13, Headset port on call...set that to on.
Or the next option Headset port ext alterer, set that to on.

If I understood the problem correctly, You're on the right track. If you go into the options on the 3904 phone you will find the "on hook default path". Set it to on. That will send the call to the head set by default when the headset button is pushed

Cool

So the only way to have teh CS50 headset from plantronics to work with an 3904 model would be with an handset lifter?

I change the options for the ehadset path and still need to press the key to answer the calls..

changing the onhook default path should do it for you, depending on what exaclty you want. I have to turn on my headset, then press the line button on the phone to make it answer. If I don't have the headset on, the phone will answer in handsfree mode. Your lifter should work on your 3904 set too. Those lifters come with a plastic extension that slides over the top of the lifter arm. This plastic will extend the lifter to the side far enough to go under and lift the handset.
