RE:

I have noticed quite a few non-US technicians frequent this site. I am interested in working in another country for a period of a few of years. I am not ticked off at my country or anything I just want to broaden my horizons. I have done a little research on the web and learned it doesn’t seem easy to find work in a foreign country because of laws. I’m just wondering if any of you guys have any suggestions. I am very familiar with VOIP and have my Nortel Succession 3.0 NNCSE as well a Cisco CCNP. I have put in many switches from the ground up and been the lead tech on a lot of cut overs. I am not picky. I am would love to hear from anyone from a country that thinks I may have a chance at working there.

Thanks

Country:
Rose's for all

V - I've been to Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Germany, and Italy with the USAF.

I will tell you it's almost impossible to get a work visa for work in a foriegn country (on your own). Your best bet is to join a company that has a presence in a foriegn country (mostly defense contractors) but there are a lot of private companies as well. Check out Nortel, Rayethon, Haliburton, CitiBank, and Perot Systems foriegn job listings - as well as the US Government.

Help on this one

I would have to concure with Chas, and mention too, it's not easy to find work in THIS country esspecially if your not from this country.

Keep in mind, even with a company with a foreign presence, you'll still need to keep up on the laws, rules and regs that govern your work in those countries....

Example. My sis has recently imagrated to Australia, and due to the laws, she is unable to work for ANYONE for the first year of her living there. YUP...NO PAID work what so ever, she can get a Gov. job that will give her an 'allowance' for the 3 month period her current visa allows, after which she needs to leave the country for 3 weeks, renew the visa and start all over again. (She went to NZ for a 3 week holiday, as it's close, cheap, and allowable under the law). The Gov. allowance she recieves is akin to a cross btwn "the Dole" and "promisary advance on future income"....AKA> Welfare she needs to pay back when she's allowed to work.

More power to ya, mate, good luck on your venture, and if you succeed...let us know.

programming from an m7208 phone?

try this web site it's pretty good

http://www.jobserve.co.uk/

Mainly a UK site but does Europe and Australia

In Europe it's easy for anyone to move around job wise, but if your outside of the EC (European community) it can be harder, a bit like your GREEN card..on saying that, if you have the skills and the employer has a vacancy, I think you would get the job.

If your thinking of coming to the UK, there are usually loads of jobs in LONDON, see the above website.

P.S. don't bring your golf clubs, we will only laugh

Thanks very much for the info. Looks like most replies are from the UK. Does anyone know of any US citizens over there working? Are the laws friendly to non European foriegn workers? I guess I will also need to sign up to be trained in golf as part of my preperation to live over there if I manage to land a job.

RE:

there is always sunny south africa.. but the nortel market is pretty small here, and you would have to work for one of the vendors.. very few companys have there own support and mainly use the IT staff for the small things, and the vendors for everything else

Vendors in SA

www.didata.co.za
www.grintektelecom.com
www.comparex.co.za

Those are the 3 Nortel Licensed Vendors in South Africa

I looked into going to work in Spain a few years (well, maybe a decade) ago. If my recall is correct, then you could get an EU work visa if a company wanted to hire you and could demonstrate that it could not easily fill the position with an equally qualified local citizen. So, if you have full qualifications and can find someone that wants to hire you, at the time it was pretty easy for a company to get past the "qualified local" part of this. Basically, they can eeasily set up the job requirements so that you fill them and others do not.
