RE:

Thanks to all that have taken our Survey.

Two of the most common requested additions to the site is a Training Section and a Call Center Section.

I've been working on a Training area (but there is a lot to cover and I'm stuck on how to approach it). What would you like to see in the Training section?

What would you like to see in the Call Center Section?

Thanks,
Chas2002

Are you talking about training through Nortel Networks? If so how about a list of classes and a link to that class through NNetworks. Or a list of classes and what is required to attend that class. Like what you should know or what class you have to take first. Oh I almost forgot. If training through NNetworks, have people reply about certain places of were to eat, were not to eat, things like that. I know when I go to places for the first time I'm not always sure of were to eat.

I'll start. Anyone going to Richardson, TX for good food go to Bonedaddys.

Extremely baffling problem

Hi Chas: Regarding training: good point from John: what is the best route to follow (ie where to start and so on)

With regards to call centres: I experience endless problems with GRTD and SMI, in the sense that each PC has different hardware / software, and one has to go to great extend to get the Nortel software installed. This includes having to install specific Sybase versions prior to installing SMI, if the PC has a specific processor and so on. The client's IT guys simply point fingers at Nortel and say it's $#@(&$ software. So what would help there? To get more info relating to what works with what and what not. Let me know if you want more specific details.

Thanks!

I've been doing reseach of 'Training Paths' and I got to tell you guys/gals - it ain't easy to map this out....With a bunch of us "command line' Techs still around, the upswing in VoIP and Server based Telecommunications, not to mention the third party apps - I had to stop mid-way and collect my thoughts.

I'll have to rethink my approach to this issue...

I started out with the concept of Apprentice, Journeyman, Craftsman and Master.
Where
Apprentice = Basic Tech Knowledge (MAC's and the Admin levels),
Journeyman = Basic Tech Knowledge + Maintenance loads,
Crafstman = Basic Tech Knowledge + Maintenance loads + Hardware installation,
Master = all of the above, plus system installation and advanced trouble-shooting skills..

What would be a better approach?

Thanks Chas2002

I think that the heirarchy that you propose is on the money. There must be a breakdown. This is logical and has a proven history. I think that you are on the right path.

Don't forget to take a break from time to time.

Rach - I agree (with both points)..

The outlay is basically an "electricians" path, but I couldn't find anything specific with respect to 'Telecom". Has anyone else ran across anything?

And I will take a break, I have (3) major things to do on the site(s), and a couple of minor things - after that, I'm done for a while - taking a siesta and hooking up with friends, letting the brain 'air' out..

Thanks for noticing the hard work from all that support the NP...

Here... it's broken... we're going to lunch, have it fixed by the time we get back. Or at least that's how the senior techs around here trained me.
