Re: My butt's cuter than yours

I have recently inherited a 5 year old Meridian system at work (having absolutetely no experience with phones before...) and am attempting to learn as I go so forgive me if this is a stupid question.

We have a Meridian 1 system here and all the manuals have Option 11 on them so I'm assuming that is the version of software that is running on them. I just got a call from one of the other departments notifying me that our phone system will not allow us to call any number with the area code of 239. Any ideas?

Best idea would be pay a Nortel Authorized Distributor to have a look and resolve for you. As a true Newbie there are lots of things which you will be able to do once you read the manuals and understand how the system operates, but messing around with your area code and dialling plans doesn't fall under that category.

Not QUITE that simple (although it is fairly straight forward)...
My concern would be are you SURE your manuals match the PBX type (as I've got more books than PBXs, it's not uncommon to find that you've got old manuals for a system that WAS there, but has been replaced with what you've got now)

Another thing that may make it a bit easier for all of us to walk you through a few things (and be prepared, your going to here "Call in a vendor and watch over their shoulder" alot, as with the self described "no experinace with phones" make most of us shake (as 1) we've been there; 2) we know what can happen with a newbie mistake (which we've all made))

you obviously know SOMETHING that you've mentioned Load (LD)

Are you also familar with the terms NXX and NPA?
Let us know and we'll take it from there..
(and too, there is a rather good "how to" type of work out here on this page (somwhere))

I have, through trial and error, learned how to copy and edit extensions, enable "outed" extensions, and a few other things (in LD20) as well as rename them in LD95 and that is about it. I promptly documented the few commands I knew how to use so that I wouldn't forget them. I had absolutely no idea what NXX or NPA is until I looked it up in the Admin Book 1 of 3 (the only one of the three I have) index and saw they had something to do with LD16 & LD90 - both are places I have never ventured into....

The facility I work in was built about 5 years ago and has only had one phone system so I'm assuming that the manuals I have are correct although incomplete. Is there any command I can type to verify the system's hardware and software versions?

We are on the verge of signing a support contract with a local company but I don't think it will be in effect till August 1 and I think this problem needs solved before then.

Rix's next goal

I'm going out on a limb here, and the guys might rip me a new one

heres what you need to do ....

LD 90
REQ prt
CUST 0 <----- almost always
FEAT net
TRAN ac1<------almost always if not try ac2 (this is where our access code is like 9-xxx-xxxx)
TYPE npa<---- this is where your area code is.

NPA 239

if it comes back with ESN071 then it does not exist and we would need to create it.

I probably won't have a chance to drive over to our phone system (we have a 300 acre campus) and try this till tomorrow morning. I'll post the results then. Thanks for your help...

I've got yer back there Gei....

Infact, was heading there myself (had to get a bit more background info first, I'm sure you understand DE)...

Gei's dead on...and sounds like youre doing a bang up job keeping track of what your learning...
Don't mind us if you start seeing "Get training"....we all agree that is best...but sometimes it's not possible and we've all (well most of us) have b been in a "fly by the seat of your pants" type of situation....

This board is an EXCELNT place for info, and as someone much smarter than I has said "the only STUPID question is that unasked!"

Don't let a few "elitists" scare you away from asking questions..but understand too, there are some things that we may have to ask further "do you get the idea" questions before we give you the "how to"s....(and some others we my not suggest you try at all on your own...)

Cheers and let us know the outcome

"...drive over to our phone system (we have a 300 acre campus) and try "

That's a big site for an 11c..
what kind of place is it? (obviously a small amount of phones)

Another thing you should check into: remote access (via ProCom plus, or Hyperterminal and a modem) to your PBX...save you the trip (and the gas)
:P

Just in case AC1 isn't where your NPA's happen to be, print a known NPA in both AC1 and AC2. This will show you where all of your actual area codes are built. At my facility we use AC2 for all of our NPA programming. So, be sure to verify both before you start building anything new.
