SD,
I am interested in using the Cell/two way radios especially for outage use. This will provide a single method of comunication to meet every groups needs, without us having to set up Telex for the Mechanics in the Diesel building, Freeset for the Instrumentation guys in the turbine building, and radios as well as freeset in containment. One system to provide for all applications. Fuel movement will probable still need a telex type system due to the large number of people that need to listen in and possibly respond during the process.

Why tied to the PBX? I was wanting to be able to administrate the Cell units. i.e. issue numbers, enable and disable cell units. But I guess I would not really need to do that. I am concerned about being able to get the units out of containment and other crapped up places in the plant. I am not sure of the cost per unit and dont know if it would be cost effective to have some just sitting in the hot tool room waiting for some rad workers to use when needed. Can you comment on that?

One "ring" to find them.... hence the reason why I continue to lobby for my company title as "Lord of the Rings"!

Ah, the joys and unique challenges of the nuclear industry. I believe the that my cohort at the public utility have the users wearing the cell/radios under their protective gear/suits with headsets on. If they contaminate themselves inside a suit then they are in deeper doo-doo than merely a contaminated radio.

You might like this feature also: because they are digital cell/radios they can do data transmission (thus they are really sort of a cell/radio/pager/PDA). Why data transmission you ask??? Dosimetry! They can tie a users personal eletronic radiation dose recorder into the wireless set and transmit it to a wireless set outside containment and then into the dose recording system for the Greenmen. Slick, eh?

I don't think the units cost much more than the newest cell phones these days. I would have them available for use outside of outages but then I understand that in the US you basically triple or quadruple your staff during outages.

These 802.11 phones, do they only work with VOIP? Or I should ask will the Spectrum24 as posted on Nortel Networks site work with out VOIP? We are currently using Spectra Link on a Mitel something but we are going to Succsesion 1000M end of June.

Ok. for anyone watching this post: I found the Motorola Harmony Communications System. upon initial inspection this looks like what i am looking for. A "site sized" cell/two way radio system. check it out at
http://www.csm-gh.com/Harmony.htm

I will research this further.

It is a good question an I would hate it if someone else had the same questions an yours was hidden in the midst of this long drawn out post.

Plus you will hopefully get more knowledgeable replies out in the main forum.

Ok, now I am impressed. That is a snazzy system!!!!! I never knew Motorola made such a thing. This might be the answer for our site considering Telus-Mike coverage does not reach our remote Nuclear Site.

I am forwarding this to the in-plant radio guy.

Thanks!
