Hello everyone,

We here at Marylhurst need your expertise, PLEASE! respond to this post.

We are trying to get our University to upgrade from an Option 11E to an Option 11C with all the bells and whistles.

My question is, can you brilliant people, recommend why we need to up grade our excisting PBX to the greater Option 11C? If possible and I know this is a asking alote, can you give your qualifications as well.

If you respond, we thank you very much.

JL

OPTION 11 INFORMATION

Nortel Option 11 Information
There are four levels within the Option 11 line. They consist of the Option 11, Option 11E, Option 11C and the new Option 11C with Rel 24 software. There are two basic differences between the models. One is the expandability and the other is the processor and linkage.

The basic Option 11 was manufactured during the releases of 16 to 18. The system can support up to 300 ports. The option 11 is a two cabinet system which allows you to put in up to 19 expansion cards. ( the processor uses up the first expansion). This entry level Option 11 meets the needs of many small companies who want to get into a PBX but want to keep the costs low. The Option 11 can be upgrade all the way to a Option 11C.

The next upgrade was done with release 20. Nortel released the Option 11E and changed the number of expansions cabinets form one to two. The Option 11E main cabinet also gives you 10 slots instead of 9. The Option 11E allows you to put up to 30 expansion cards in it.

The Option 11C changed everything. There are still 3 cabinets, but Nortel changed the connections from copper to fiber. This allowed the user to put expansion cabinets up to 2km away from the main cabinet. Northern Telecom also upgraded to processor to enhance the processing speed. The option 11C is easier to interface with and has more feature enhancements than the previous two models of the option 11.

The new Option 11C with Rel 24 Software is completely changing everything about the Option 11 family. The new option 11C has 4 expansion cabinets connected via fiber. This gives you up to 1000 ports and room for 50 expansion card slots. The new Option 11C will work for an office with 150 lines and 600 employees! Not bad for a machine made for 150 users back in 1990. The Rel 24 Option 11C has just been released and the new updates will be listed here as they become available.

Nortel's Option 11C has the same processor, Motorola's 68040, as many of the larger Meridian 1 series switches. The Option 11C is a well suited switch in a heavy call volume environment, such as a call center. The increase in processing capabilities has allowed the Option 11C to support many of the applications suites available from Nortel, such as computer telephony, Customer Controlled Routing (CCR) and many more. With the new power of the Option 11C, it will be able to handle your needs for today as well as into the future.

Nortel has included an ethernet connection on the Option 11C which allows you to connect to your Meridian Administration Tools Rls.5. This is designed to provide a simple alarm management system with a connection to an SNMP monitoring station, such as HP OpenView.

The advantages that Option 11 provide work well in a distributed network environment, such as a high-rise office building or campus setting. The Option 11 is capable of being used to distribute network information throughout many different locations, as far as 2 miles away. The fiber optic connections allow seamless integration into your existing networks.

RE:

In a previous post you were informed that bot your hardware and software are no longer going to be supported by the manufacturer (Nortel) very soon.

What additional reasons do you need?

Jack

If my phone switch accomplishes what I want it too why buy something new. There are plenty of parts around for most equipment. But some people just want the newest and I can't fault them for that.

You know, you are correct with this thought. I will just wait until the switch no longer works, then we will upgrade.

thank you all for your comments.
