Our vendor seems to dial-up every once and a while to 'take a look around our switch'. This worries me. We are thinking about giving them a limited account that way they have what is only needed to do their job if we call them. What loads do you normally give your vendor access to

Thanks,
Jes

Do they have any justification for being in there other than 'taking a look around?' Do they do remote monitoring?

It's a tricky question to answer since it depends a lot on your relationship with your vendor and the terms of what they're supposed to be doing.

From a vendor point of view I might need access to any load at any given time depending on what I'm doing but I also work for a customer who has assigned the job of password and access control to me... the vendor.

If they're in there without justification then I think a password change is in order along with a call to the vendor to get a few things straight.

I have caught a few former employees trying to log in to 'take a look around.'

Of course that's just my $.02 USD, I've only worked in one aspect of this business on one contract so that's all I know.

They are a good vendor; however, it is eerie when the modem just starts screaching and no one has called to say that they are going to dialup.

Turn the volume down.

Not sure what your password policy is but I always change our contractor / vendor password at least quarterly if not more frequently. This helps prevent former employees of the vendor or contractor from 'taking a look around' whenever they want. I also make it a point to pull weekly audit trails and keep an eye on who is doing what where and why.

Remote Call Forward of DN to MMail.

I have my dial-in modem turned off at all times, that way the vendor has to call me before they can dial in.

Even I have to turn it on for ME to dail in

Can't do it here because I'm in a Hospitality Environment...

But at other sites I use to place my modem number in DND and route callers to a RAN that stated to dial xxx-xxx-xxxx for authinication and activation of the line...If the person or company was on the list - the attendant would un-block the line...

Also there are a number of "Secure" RAS modems on the market that required authinication...

They've been trying to get rid of all the modems for over a year now.

That would make it really hard to get any work done while I'm fishing at the lake with my laptop dialed in over a cell phone.
