At risk of being repetitive, and going over the same ground:

1: To prove the type of cable you have from your Comm port, connect from the PC to a modem (defaulted). Open your HyperTerminal (more about that soon). At this point, it doesn't matter to much the settings. With HyperTerminal open AND connected to the modem (dare I say make sure it is powered on??) type at (enter)

Some basic assumptions here, but, if you get a reply that says ok then you are using a "straight through" cable. If there is no response, then you will need to modify PROPERTIES... on the "connect using" option set to other available comm ports and test again.

If this fails, place your "null modem" in line with your cable to the modem and try the above again... if failing then using your properties to change comm ports.

Whats the above achieve: it tells you what kind of cable you have. The general setup (at least here) is that you use a straight cable with a null modem adapter to communicate with the PABX comm ports. It also will effectively prove if your PC comm port is working and if infact HyperTerminal is working for you.

Next:

HyperTerminal. Do not like it, but OK in case of emergency. You need to configure the HT correctly. You need to have the appropriate Comm port selected. Once you have this, press the CONFIGURE button just below it.

Port speed: If you look at the SSC (main cabinet, card on the left side) there is a red DIP switch there. There are also various numbers next to the individual switches. Only 1 switch should be thrown at any time, and the one that is thrown is the port speed... generally 9600. Your HT thus needs to be set to this.

The others are 8 bits No Parity 1 Stop bit. I am of the belief that you can use either XON/XOFF or No Flow Control

Now click on the settings tab.

Change the emulation to VT100 then click click ASCII SETUP. Here highlight FROCE INCOMING DATA TO 7 BIT.

Press the appropriate OKs.

Congrats.... HT is setup.

The PABX

As stated earlier you generally PORT 0 on the 3 outlet cable from the PABX. Given that HT is set up, and you have the correct cable / option to the PABX, then if you hit the enter key, you should get a response.... any response.

If you do not, you can try (ctrl)] thats the control key held down, and at the same time the right SQUARE bracket. reason: if the port is locked to the voice mail.

If this does not work, move your PC comm cable to port 1 or 2. If you hit the enter key, and get "hyrogliphics" then you have an incorrect port speed on the PC, so try varying that....remember here that the port speed on PABX ports 1 and 2 are not dip switch set.

If you still cannot see whats going on, try having your PC connected to PORT 0, and press the RESET key on the SSC. If lucky you should see the system messages through the initialisation.

And if all of the above fails:..... call the vendor

Good Luck
