New Hire Needs Assistance

As you guys know, I work in an all Nortel shop. We just hired a new guy and he has only worked on Avaya. I would like to be able to translate between the two worlds so that his training can be as smooth as possible. Can any of you tell me how I can best help him transition? Are there reference materials that I could read that will help me be a better trainer to him?

I popped over to the Avaya page and left a note over there too. I thought that maybe between the two pages we all might be able to come up with something.

Cheers,
Rachelle

I'd be interested in the answer as well.

The few times I've seen the Avaya interface I was sort of impressed with its simplicity.

Rather than stepping back and suggest that he/she needs to forget everything and start from scratch your best bet is to introduce them to Element Manger. No need to be a rocket scientist to figure out.

What will this person's job functions be?

I also posted in the Avaya forum and received 3 pdf files that are pretty good.
We don't use Element Manager, even though apparently it is installed. I would not be able to train this person successfully. As I am reading through the books, I am making a list of Avayo mneumonics and crossing it with Nortel. If I can show the new guy where we are the same and not dwell on how different we are, that should make for a smoother transition.

The new guy will start slowly and later just get bombed. Eventually, he will need to be like the rest of us. He will have to know MAC, line repair, cable protocols, CallPilot Manager, CallPilot Reporter, CallPilot App Builder, Symposium Admin, Symposium Scripting, TM Billing, videoconferencing, our cell phone admin...... just to name the daily stuff. I hope he is a lover of 'new' things. We have a lot to cover.

I'd think that the biggest issue will be learning the MAC commands.

Just beat into their head that they should always print first, change and print again. At a minimum if there is an Oh Sh*t!! moment you can then at least put it back to where you started at.

Don't forget to stress the importance of EDD's as well, that is of course if they don't mind retyping

You are so right, Jack. Printing first has saved my bacon, more than once. He is very experienced with Avaya and their screens so, ours will look different but, it should feel similar.

Does the new guy get the benefit of any training $$$ At least the admin class would get him a chance to start learning the Nortel language.

Its been since 94' when I last touched an Avaya G3r switch, but even back then the big difference is the Avaya is GUI menu driven. It has a very good interface.
A few years back, I use to bring in my old co-workers and teach them how the Nortel works, and they would keep me up to date on the Avaya.

I can say this, We can go from Nortel to Avaya and pick it up alot quicker than the other way around. He will just need to be patient and ask you how to do things and listen to your answer and not say.... WE DID THIS WAY ON THE AVAYA. They want to convince you that we don't know everything about our switch and if we did, then we could do things the same exact way.

First thing you will say is "Where are your CALL PATHs". In the Avaya (at least on the 3gr), there was a feature called Call Path when looking at the GUI of a phone set. Call Path had (3) fields.

Your could put in an extension or ring group in each field of the Call Path. If you do not answer your phone in what we call the NCOS number of rings, your line would then move down the Call Path fields. If no one else answered the your line, then caller would come back to your voice mail.

I would always get that question. They are just different.

Enough rambling...

Training will be coming but, I want to be able to communicate with the guy until then. Yesterday, I finished going through book 1 of 3. The Avaya page yielded these resources. I took notes and made a bit of a cross reference. I have a few weeks to get through all 3 books. He doesn't start until mid-June so, I've got a little time. Thanks for everything, guys.

Cheers,
rachelle

Hey thanks for all of the chat regarding Avaya. I am so glad that we did this and that I have read so much about a system that I will never use. Management just told me that they were mistaken and the new guy is not an Avaya tech. The new guy worked with Teltronics 20-20 PBXs. Has anyone had dealings with these devices???? Anyone have any documentation or advise how to cross reference this with Nortel???? Geesh!!!
