I've had to take taht approach even with "trained" Nortel folks who simply did not do things the correct way -- i.e, MY WAY __________________ Dogs rollover Phones hunt

If you make a change and the switch INI's, restarts or losses power before an EDD is made the changes will no longer exist. Really up to you. Me I always do an EDD, it is ALWAYS quicker than retyping. __________________ Dogs rollover Phones hunt

It doesn't hurt the system and it is a good habit to get in to. Chg EDD Just a good practice! rlc __________________ No matter where you go, there is the Ladies Love Marty Fan Club. :bow2: :bow2: :bow2:

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Ive been in the communications industry since the mid 70's and have always found it great when an individual approached a new peson with an attitude similar to yours Rachelle.. I have had experience on a vast number of manufacturers PABX's and Electronics Key.Hell, how many of us are versed in 1A1 key I started that long ago. Many could say Im an ol fart when it comes to new equipment . However in the thirty plus years I have been in this business I alway knew there were others who knew one hell of a lot more about things then I and it always helped me. To level the playing field seeing his new job will be in Nortel sitting down and telling the individual first and foremost 1} There are no stupid question. 2} Dont be afraid to ask if you dont know. 3] Also just letting him know that hey you may not even know the answer to all the question he may have but you will find out. This final statement could really be a benefit to his learning experience

I can appreciate that you don't want your systems to crash because "the new guy thought he can do it", and at the same time he is probably expected to be as independant as possible from day one. But as you and others have also stated, THE BASICS first. Crawl, then walk, run and eventually fly When I started workin on Nortel, my mentor made me do changes the long way around, no procom scripts, no short cuts like ECHG = YES (I had to read out the prompts to him and explain what they meant as I hit enter!), he didn't care if it took me 10 hours or I had to work late. He also made me look up the answers in the NTP's, then bring it to him and explain my self, before letting me lose. Old fashioned, but that is always one of the important things in telecoms and IT: Think about what you are about to do first, there are always consequences. I never found my time wasted sitting down and sketching things out on paper first. Much less complicated than say a system restore of a 61C in the middle of a busy work day because you didn't think of a or b. Any way, I hope your new guy realizes that he will have an experienced, knowledgeable, well versed teacher / mentor in you. Give your self a pat on the back for that.

If you say around these boards long enough, you will learn a lot that you will never cover in a classroom.
